Ms. Blackwells books are wonderful!  Jul 1, 2003
A charming story set in the town of "Gresham" in England in the late 1800,s. Ms. Blackwell takes you on a marvelous trip into the town of "Gresham", introduces you to the friendly and (sometimes) eccentric people who live there. Miss Lydia Clark is a school teacher who begins to wonder if she has missed something by not getting married. One of her suitors is hilarious. Her descriptions of the English coutryside is amazing. You will love the journey!!
Fun to read, yet has moments of suspense  Oct 23, 2002
This book is full of newlyweds, including Andrew and Julia Phelps, and their daughter Elizabeth is married to schoolmaster John and they are expecting their first child. The title character, Lydia Clark, was previously teaching school in Scotland but has come home to Gresham and lives with her parents, and is now in charge of an advanced school for children who are too old for the regular village school. Archeologist Jacob Pitney wants to learn about poetry to impress another lady, and asks Lydia to help him, with surprising results. The ending is great for most characters in the book, but I felt that there was more to be learned about a few characters, and it doesn't appear that a fourth book is in the works so far.
A great and entertaining book!  Nov 27, 2001
I really enjoy all of Lawana Blackwell's novels. This
is one of my favorites. The story is very entertaining
and good. It's a good Christian romance novel.
The Uplifting Stories from Gresham  Sep 24, 2001
After reading the first two novels in the Gresham Chronicles series I eagerly awaited and was blessed to find that The Dowry of Miss Lydia Clark was equally as enjoyable. The characters immediately draw you in and you come to find that life just might be a little better if we all lived in Gresham. The reader becomes so engaged in the lives of the quirky characters, that I found myself laughing out loud and then crying with joy for the blessings that eventually always find their way to the tender hearts of the people of Gresham. I am anxious for the next novel as I ponder in my mind what exactly is in store for those people I have come to know as well as my own neighbors!!
yet another delightful visit to Gresham awaits!  Jul 5, 2001
Lydia Clark, thirty-four-year-old spinster school mistress, has resigned herself to finding fulfillment with her parents, job, and relationship with Jesus Christ. Suddenly she seems to be the object of affection by two men, both of whom do not interest her at all. Widowed Mr. Towly, old and unattractive, makes no bones about the fact that he needs a mother for his children and someone to take care of his home. Harold Sanders, crude and uneducated, does everything he can think of to attract Lydia, and, in doing so, finds himself attracted to someone else. When Lydia does finally begin to fall in love, it is with archeologist Jacob, who is desperately in love with novelist Miss Rawlins, and only wants Lydia to help him understand her books. Meanwhile, love is also blossoming with other Gresham residents; Paul Treves has finally gotten over his broken heart from book 2, and finds himself attracted to Mrs. Somerville, mysterious newcomer in Gresham. Widowed Mrs. Meeks finds herself attracted to a neighborly young man, only to realize that she can never marry him because he is an unbeliever. Noelle Somerville, who is frantically trying to run from her past and restore her relationship to God at the same time, has made up her mind never to wed a vicar, but is nevertheless hopelessly attracted to one. Love is even showing itself among the teenage set, as Laurel Phelps receives love poems from Ben Mayhew. Once again, Blackwell has woven together many different stories of the residents of Gresham, uniting them all with the steadying advice and presence of Andrew and Julia Phelps and the unconditional love and free gift of grace from Jesus Christ. Superb addition to this wonderful series!
