SOMEWHAT akin to the passages we have last referred to, PART is another class, in which the Saviour is represented as sei- " bearing our sins." Thus, it is written in the Epistle to the Hebrews, " Christ was once offered to bear the sins 0/sin-bearer. many." The Apostle Peter says of Him, in like manner, Heb. a, " Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the 2 ' . 1 Pet. ii. tree." And in the fifty-third chapter of Isaiah,which 24. may almost be regarded as a part of the New Testament, so frequently and expressly is it there applied to Jesus Christ,we find these statements : " The Lord hath laid Isa-i"'- on Him the iniquity of us all;" " By His knowledge shall ' ' my righteous servant justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities;" "He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bare the sins of many." To " bear sin" is a form of expression frequently applied in Scripture to persons who are charged with the guilt, and subjected to the merited penalties, of their own transgressions. Thus, it is written, " Every one that eateth it shall Levit. xix. bear his iniquity, because he hath profaned the hallowed thing of the Lord, and that soul shall be cut off from among his people ;" " They shall keep mine ordinance, lest they bear sin for it, and die therefor, if they profane it;" " Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin ; and Levit. xxii. he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord shall surely be 9- put to death;" " The man that forbeareth to keep the Levit . passover, even the same soul shall be cut off from among Xgiv' IS, PART his people; because he brought not the offering of the 3.
