Overview
Is it science? Is it religion? What exactly is the Design Revolution? Today scientists, mathematicians and philosophers in the intelligent design movement are challenging a certain view of science--one that limits its investigations and procedures to purely law-like and mechanical explanations. They charge that there is no scientific reason to exclude the consideration of intelligence, agency and purpose from truly scientific research. In fact, they say, the practice of science often does already include these factors! As the intelligent design movement has gained momentum, questions have naturally arisen to challenge its provocative claims. In this book William A. Dembski rises to the occasion clearly and concisely answering the most vexing questions posed to the intelligent design program. Writing with nonexperts in mind, Dembski responds to more than sixty questions asked by experts and nonexperts alike who have attended his many public lectures, as well as objections raised in written reviews. The Design Revolution has begun. Its success depends on how well it answers the questions of its detractors. Read this book and you'll have a good idea of the prospects and challenges facing this revolution in scientific thinking.

A great guide for learning the basics  Nov 2, 2006
This book is a comprehensive guide that presents a lot of useful information concerning intelligent design for beginners.

My rating is short of five stars due to the lack of more biological examples that refutes Darwinism on the basis of providing a poor explanation on evolution.

Railroading Galileo  Jun 29, 2006
Daniel Dennett wrote in Nature magazine that (neo) Darwinism is like a universal acid, burning up all other theories and viewpoints. Thousands of years of scientific progress therefore have come to a halt and we know that this view can never be decisively challenged. That being the case, the following would never happen: Time Magazine would never have a cover story deliberately misrepresenting "Intelligent Design". Barbara Forrest would never get William Dembski kicked out from teaching at Baylor University and sabotage the opening of the William Polyani Science Center.

For some reason, the universal acid couldn't quite burn through Dembski's theories on its own and needed some help from the highly evolved, if accidental brains of Dennett, Forrest and the journalists at Time magazine. Time, chance and natural laws, while sufficient to create all the diversity of the universe for some reason still required Forrest's inquisition to curtail the free and open exchange of ideas. As with the astronomical community in Galileo's day, fortunately there was a strong enough elite in the academy at Baylor to stop us from--God forbid!--thinking for ourselves.

But even the most highly evolved brains aren't perfect, and or some reason the academy has forgotten to ban this book, although I'm sure they'll get around to it. The question and answer format makes it a pleasant diversion even for those of us with less fit brains. So get it now before it's destroyed by the universal acid.

The Ideal FAQ for Responding to Critics of Intelligent Design  Jun 21, 2006
The Design Revolution by mathematician, and philosopher William Dembski is perhaps the best "bang for your buck" treatment on intelligent design. Dembski is a leading design theorist who offers this popular work almost as an "FAQ" on intelligent design. This book is ideal for a layperson who would like to understand intelligent design and see how design proponents answer objections from critics.

Dembski tackles common objections such as "is intelligent design simply disguised theology?" and "is intelligent design the same as creationism?" Dembski explains that while intelligent design may have theological implications, the theory itself is based upon empirical data, making it a science. In fact, Dembski points out that design is no different in this respect from Darwinism, which also has theological implications. Moreover, since intelligent design does not seek to answer religious questions like the identity of the designer, and does not derive its claims from religious texts such as Genesis, the theory is clearly distinct from creationism.

Dembski also answers questions such as "does design requires miracles", "how can `specified complexity' provide a reliable indicator of design?", "is intelligent design testable?", and whether intelligent design is just a "political agenda masquerading as a scientific research program." The book also tackles core philosophical objections to design, such as whether we can infer design if we do not have direct experience with an intelligent designer in biology? Dembski's answer is crystal clear: "the signs of intelligence that occur in human artifacts and biological systems are not merely analogous. They are isomorphic, for we find the exact same form of specified complexity in each." (pg. 230) The Design Revolution explores the research program offered by intelligent design as well as many other crucial topics in the debate.

Most honest creationist evaluation of evolution  Mar 22, 2006
If you want to engage the creationist/ID debate, Dembski consistently presents the evolutionist arguments honestly and completely, which can be said of few if any other creationist/IDists. His counterarguments also are often logical and factual, and their flaws are far more subtle than the run-of-the mill creationists. This will definitely exercise your scientific convictions.

You've convinced me!  Mar 18, 2006
Having read all the reviews and observed the apalling quality and bigotry of most of the opponents' letters, I have decided to buy 'The Design Revolution'to see for myself! I've read all Dawkins' books, my interest in the subject having been sparked originally by 'Evolution a theory in crisis' by Michael Denton, first published in 1985. Incidentally Denton offered no alternative theory to Evolution and only mentions religion to provide historicl context. It was and is clear that the Theory of Evolution as applied to the evolution of species has major flaws. If only its proponents would admit this instead of indulging in abusive retoric, it might be possible to have a productive debate. Have evolutionists considered that it is they who may most closely resemble the followers of the Phlogiston theory?!
