Item Description...
The Contempory Christian, Applying God's Word to Today's World by John Stott from Intervarsity Press is now available in convenient softcover. John Stott makes a trumpet call to all disciples of Christ to be both contemporary and Biblical. The first means to live and move with the times. The second requires that we retain unswerving loyalty to God's Word. Combining the two is not an easy task. Today people reject Christianity, not because they think it is false, but because they think it is irrelevant. Disciples, he says, can prepare for this task by cultivating a listening ear, embracing both mind and emotions, and finding God's true guidance. In addition, he sympathetically uncovers the emptiness of secular men and women, demonstrating how the church can meet their quests with the truth and grace of Jesus Christ. John Stott is knwon worldwide as a gifted evangelist, preacher, scholar and Christian statesman. Among his books are Basic Christianity, The Cross of Christ, and Romans.

Publishers Description
Recipient of a Christianity Today 1994 Critics Choice Award Recipient of the 1993 Christian Booksellers Association/Europe Book of the Year Award People today reject Christianity not because they think it is false but because they believe it is irrelevant.John Stott knows otherwise. In this book he challenges all of us to move with the times while standing firmly on the truth of God's Word. "To be 'contemporary' is to live in the present," Stott writes. "To be a 'contemporary Christian, ' however, is to ensure that our present is enriched both by our knowledge of the past and by our expectation of the future."The challenge, then, is to be both conservative and radical--conservative in guarding God's revelation and radical in applying that revelation to the realities of the contemporary world: space travel, homelessness, genetic engineering, pollution, war, health care, gang violence, education and more.Opening our eyes to the Word and the world, Stott shows how Christianity can speak effectively and relevantly to the contemporary world. He includes chapters on the human paradox, authentic freedom, mind and emotions, evangelism and social action, the pastoral ideal and dimensions of renewal. For those familiar with Stott, The Contemporary Christian is a "must-read" book. For those who have not yet benefited from his insight and passion, The Contemporary Christian affords the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with one of the most widely read and respected Christian thinkers at work today.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
The Contemporary Christian: Applying God's Word to Today's World  Apr 27, 2008
The word religion comes from a Latin word, meaning a "model for regulating life according to the gods." More correctly, Christianity is a revelation of a "given" model, specifically Jesus of Nazerath. Dr. John R. W. Stott, in his book, THE CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN, focus on living out a "faith, once delivered to the saints," in a time frame radically different from Jesus' day, more than 2000 years ago. He does the job with conscious sensitivity to these radical differences better than any writer I know.
Good, but flawed....  May 12, 2006
Stott gives us a level-headed, comprehensive exposition of what it means to be a present-day Christian, with some chapters that are dedicated to pulpit ministers. It would be difficult to find a book that had less faults, but the faults of this book are pretty big.

There's nothing wrong with the doctrine of the book--unless you, like me, have no sympathy for Calvinism (which makes a couple of brief appearances in the form of assertions of human depravity)--it's the writing. While Stott writes with extraordinary clarity, he also is so careful in this book to make his case with calmness and generosity that the finished product is bland. The language he uses is uninspired, uninspiring, and unimaginative.

So Stott makes a good case; it's just that the book is uninviting.
A Book of Profound Importance  May 23, 2003
John Stott has made a most profound statement in this book - calling God's Church to the act of "Double Listening", or continuing to listen to the Bible as well as the culture, to apply Biblical principles to living in the present age, and to reach out with integrity to the world in God's name.

This book should be second only to the Bible on the reading list of every Christian!

Highly recommended  Apr 30, 2001
This book is the first book by John Stott I have read and I found it very readable and profound at the same time. It challenged a lot of my attitudes about Christians and the world and really made me think about how I can live in the world without compromising my faith in Jesus. I did not agree with everything in the book, but it was definitely well-thought out and well-argued. I am looking forward to reading other books by Stott.
Excellent Book  Mar 30, 2000
I highly recommend this book for two reasons. First, this book underscores the important of the Christian world view in contemporary times. Stott is very methodical at outlining the relevancy and importance of theological and historical issues (such as the resurrection) to our contemporary world. He does this without diluting historic Christianity. Secondly, this book reaffirmed my faith in Jesus Christ.
