Item Description...
The author offers an unusual blend of official Catholic teaching - juxtaposed with positions of contemporary theologians - that will both appeal to and enlighten all who are interested in what has been happening in the church since Vatican II. This is a clearly presented introduction to Catholicism that answers the question of what it means to be a believing, practicing Catholic in the Church in light of Vatican II ecclesiology and contemporary theology. Dennis Doyle presents a solidly academic yet lively approach to understanding the workings of the contemporary Catholic Church. He looks at the challenges the church faces, its nature and mission, its symbolic character, its diversity, its leadership, the role of the laity, the meaning of Christian spirituality today, religious communities, the meaning of being a "pilgrim" church, Mary as the model of the church, and much more.

Publishers Description
What does it mean to be a Catholic today? Doyle addresses this important question by examining key documents of the Second Vatican Council: Lumen Gentium (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church) and Gaudium et Spes (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World). He offers an unusual blend of official Catholic teaching juxtaposed with positions of contemporary theologians that will both appeal to and enlighten students.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Catholic Understanding  Feb 16, 2008
this is actually an excellent book. i am using it in my class at USC which covers the Democracy and Dissent of the Catholic Church in an effort to offer a better understanding of Catholicism and its worldly importance. this book gives a broad overview of the issues in the past and relates them to the beginning. it also offers an array of opinions and tries to convey the proper catholic belief to any given social or religious issue with basis from the Vatican II and it's most important documents, Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes. it's even better for students because it's an informative texts written in such a way that the events are told as stories most of us can relate to and in that way, the book is more interesting and easier to read in a rapid class like mine.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who does not already have a strong catechetical background. There are a lot of basic facts in the book that are in error. I think the material is above what the author can grasp. I would put this on your do not read list until you have a sounder understanding of Vatican II and Lumen Gentuim. I would not recomend this book
Student Friendly  May 1, 2004
Students are challenged by Catholic doctrine presented in very everyday situations. Conservative students are pushed to consider the value of feminist theology and social justice, while liberal students encounter the necessity of authority and revelation. Doyle's even-handed treatment of the theological spectrum makes Church Emerging more than an history book, or dry list of doctrines. Instead the book functions as a bridge between left and right by illustrating that the concerns of both stem from the gospel message. The dusty events and documents of the Second Vatican Council are presented within the context of contemporary issues so the Church Emerging both informs students of past occurences, as it jars them into considering how Catholic teaching might (gasp) apply to their own lives today.

Other features which make this book an excellent choice for the classroom or personal study are the discussion questions and bibliography found at the end of each chapter. I have found students eager to engage in conversation after reflecting upon Doyle's questions. Throughout the fact-packed text main points are highlighted and summarized in tables, lists and charts, making it easier for students to identify the important concepts of each chapter. Furthermore, Doyle begins each chapter by sharing a personal experience or story. This functions not merely as a catchy intro, but students have commented that they feel close to the author and more comfortable with negotiating through the material. In writing Church Emerging from Vatican II, Dr. Doyle has provided a great service for the students, the teachers and the Church.

Church Emerging...  Mar 2, 2004
A lucid and engaging exposition of some of the more salient issues facing the contemporary Roman Catholic Church. An excellent introductory resource for students.
An ideal introduction to the theology of the Church  Feb 21, 2004
I am astonished at how much basic and important information can be found in this book; and yet it is consistently presented in a very personal, engaging way. Doyle presents sophisticated theological reflection in a form that accurately guages the needs and abilities of undergraduates in the United Staes. The author's personal/confessional commentary makes the vital connection between experience and theology while clearly setting forth the official teachings of the Church. I have used this book for several semesters with great success. My students love it.
