Item Description...
A monument of 19th-century thought from one of the founders of modern theology. Schleiermacher's emphasis on inner experience, the knowledge of God as meditated through history, concern for the believing community's theological reflection, and Christological focus are still widely debated. 776 pages, softcover. T. & T. Clark.

Publishers Description
The classic work of Christian theology, which seeks to present the Christian faith in its entirety.Schleiermacher was equally at home in the theological systems of Protestant orthodoxy and the new world of thought shaped by the historical and natural sciences and German philosophy. He follows a confident course through the entire range of themes in dogmatics but leaves both the dogmatic task and the individual themes transformed by a powerful and original mind. A new foreword by B. A. Gerrish summarises the dogmatic goals of The Christian Faith and corrects some common misreadings of his work.

The only English translation of Schleiermacher's major work  Oct 4, 2006
This book is just a repackaging of a 1928 work, the only English translation of Schleiermacher's Der christliche Glaube that has ever appeared. It translates Schleiermacher's second (1830-1831) edition, ignores the significantly different first (1821-1822) edition, and quite frankly, was always a lousy translation.

Just as the best translations of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason take into full account the discrepancies between the first (1781) and second (1787) editions, so a new translation of Der christliche Glaube is needed that will do the same with Schleiermacher's two editions. In the meantime, those of us who are capable of reading Der christliche Glaube in German should do so.
An essential for understanding modern theology  Feb 25, 2006
Friedrich Schleiermacher was the founder of Protestant liberalism. His description of the divine as the feeling of "absolute dependence" set the stage for all subsequent attempts to defend the Christian religion against post-Enlightment skepticism toward the truth of religious claims. College and seminary level students will profit from reading the primary source, as opposed to secondary treatments. I use portions of the text in an upper division course in modern theology for Bible and theology majors, knowing that the effort made now will benefit them greatly when they get to seminary.
A Seminal Work in Modern Theology.  Jun 17, 2000
Its no coincidence that Schleiermacher is called the 'father of modern theology.' This classic in systematic theology is indispensible to any theology student tho wants to understand liberal theology. The Christian faith is distinctly Christological in nature. Schleiermacher, because of his Moravian upbringing, has great reverance for Christ (unlike some of the modern theologians who were to follow). Another distinguishing characteristic of the Christian Faith is Schleiermacher's idea of "religion as feeling." For Schleiermacher, feeling was what authenticated religion. Another distiguishing feature is Schleiermacher's opinion of other faiths and Christianity's relation to those faiths. He has quite a progressive notion of religious pluralism for a nineteenth century theologian. In short, no theology scholar should be without this monumental work. As an accomponiment, I suggest you purchase Schleiermacher's "On Religion: Speeches to its Cultured Despisers," which is another book that gave birth to liberal theology. Schleiermacher truly was the greatest theologian between Martin Luther and Karl Barth.
