Item Description...
A biblical and historical perspective on the charismatic movement New titles have continued to appear since this book was first published and much of the debate has been among evangelicals and has centred on the mature of New Testament prophecy and, in particular, the second prophecy of Agabus. In this enlarged edition the author examines this subject in detail, giving the reader an even clearer understanding of the issues involved in today's charismatic movement. 'Evangelical Press has produced a classic. Whether you are deeply interested in the charismatic movement, intrigued by it, or opposed to it, this book is a must. It gives a biblical and historical perspective on the movement. It is the most carefully researched, solidly-based account that has been produced. The biblical exegesis is superb.' Evangelism Today 'A very fair survey which deserves careful examination.' Prophetic Witness 'This book has a breadth of scope which makes it especially valuable.' Banner of Truth

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Magnificent!  Nov 2, 2005
I've been a Christian for 35 years. I'm also a FORMER Pentecostal minister. Mr. Budgen's work is a Scripturally accurate diagnosis of these deceptive teachings which ravage the Church in these latter days. His book also accurately presents the Gospel as the only cure for this spiritual malaise. As for the remark of a previous reviewer re non-charismatics as having a "powerless lifestyle": the Gospel is the power of God for salvation and everything pertaining to it; NOT pneumatological heresies and dubious "experiences" of doubtful origin. Every believer alive today must choose to continue in the downward spiral into empty subjectivism and baptised occultism or return to the teachings of the New Testament and the great Reformers. I highly recommend this book. It is a light shining in an ever-darkening place.
Horrible  Aug 4, 2005
This book helps misinformed Christians to feel comfortable in their powerless lifestyle. It's guaranteed to create more division within the Body of Christ. Definitely not recommended to anyone.

Speaking in tongues has not ceased in this household, I can guarantee you that. Nor has it ceased at all from the Body of Christ. It has only ceased in religious churches that have forbidden it (against God's command in 1 Corinthians 14:39). I know of literally thousands of Spirit-filled Christians who praise and magnify God in other tongues on a regular basis and who build themselves up on their most holy faith by praying in the Holy Ghost.

Stop believing the religious doctrines that you were taught in "sunday school" and start believing the Word of Almighty God.

Guns don't kill people, religion does.

(Christianity is not a religion, it's a lifestyle of faith and power, by grace).

The Best response to the charismatic movement  Mar 31, 2004
Whether Victor Budgen was ever actually involved in the charismatic movement, I do not know, but as one who was a "tongues-speaking" charismatic for 27 years I can assure you his descriptions of the movement, it's attitudes, and teachings demonstrates an accurate first-hand knowledge of what is actually occurring. His grasp of the scriptures relating to the charismatic gifts is rare even among reformed theologians. For those of us who were once a part of the charismatic movement, reading this book is embarrassing, realizing how incredibly deceived we once were. But the book also makes one angry, angry at the incredible ignorance of the church on her history, particularly among reformed theologians and seminary professors who should know better! Contrary to popular teaching the charismatic movement did not begin in 1900 on Azusa street, as Victor Budgen clearly demonstrates. The church has had to deal with charismatic dogma in almost every century since Augustine and Chrysostom. Luther dealt with it. The Puritans dealt with it. Jonathan Edwards wrote extensively on it, refuting charismatic teachings in his day. But we moderns no longer stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us, nor honor our fathers and mothers in the Lord. We have traded the Westminster assembly's doctrine of Sola Scriptura for an arrogant, self-centered "solo scriptura." Thus we have reformed seminary professors today teaching such nonsense as valid New Testament prophecy being a mixture of truth and error! And all this based on flimsy exegesis of trying to uncover subtle hidden errors in the 2nd prophecy of Agabus! Victor Budgen shows that such blasphemous teachings undermine the finality, the sufficiency, and the inerrancy of "the more sure word of prophecy," the Scriptures (2 Pe 1:19-21). He further demonstrates that the charismatic redefinition of "miracle" undermines the true miraculous origins of the gospel. In my opinion, this book is THE BEST response to the charismatic movement that I have yet to see. It should be required reading of every teaching elder, ruling elder, and seminary student. Every Pentecostal or charismatic, who truly loves God's Word as the only inerrant authority for all of faith and practice, should also read it and seriously consider the arguments Victor Budgen presents.
