Engaging and Enlightening  Aug 6, 2009
The Case of the "Hopeless" Marriage, A Nouthetic Counseling Case from Beginning to End by Dr. Jay Adams is a well-written and engaging book that is under 150 pages so it's also a breeze to read. It reads like a story and the reader is drawn into the dialogue. Dr. Adams does a superb job of allowing the reader to become an "observer" to an "actual" Nouthetic Counseling Case. For those new to Nouthetic Counseling, or for those who have heard of it but are unfamiliar with it, there are a number of books (many written by Dr. Adams) which cover the ins and outs of Nouthetic counseling, several of which are referenced in the footnotes. One easy to read book that is similar in style to this one is Greg Dawson and the Psychology Class.

Dr. Adams combines his years of actual counseling/ pastoral experience and his commitment to the integrity of Scripture to inform readers about the mode and purpose of Nouthetic Counseling, using a "typical" case which centers on a foundational relationship, a married couple. Don't skip over the introduction as it sets the tone of the book and provides necessary background information.

The book is laid out in about 10 chapters by counseling session and reads somewhat like a play with commentary from Dr. Adams indicated by "Let's pause to discuss..." and resumes with "Let's continue..." sub-headings. This layout is very useful and serves to both inform and allow room for the reader to "interact" with it. The appendix has a list of additional observations in regard to the counseling sessions. In the "Pause to discuss..." sections, Dr. Adams postulates a number of questions or the reader to consider and encourages the reader to think critically and logically about them.

While the book's focus is primarily upon helping a couple who feel trapped in a "hopeless' marriage, you will gain insight into how to apply biblical principles to communication problems, faulty thinking, addressing sin and more by studying this most excellent work by Dr. Adams. Throughout the course of the book, a number of topics will be touched upon, just as in "real life." I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is certainly worth the read for Christian couples who themselves may feel like they are in a "hopeless" marriage, for those who seek to help others and certainly for pastors/ elders.
