More About Gertrude Chandler Warner, Allan Corduner, Marian Spencer, Celia Johnson, Francis Nyamnjoh, Jose Cabot & Tim Ohr

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Gertrude Chandler Warner was born on April 16, 1890, in Putnam, Connecticut. She came from a musical family and played the cello. Because of illness, she was unable to finish high school, and learned from a tutor. In 1918, because all of the male teachers were away fighting in World War I, she was asked to teach first grade. The majority of children in her class did not speak English well, and she made up "The Box-Car Children" in 1924. The book remained a single title, until it was republished in 1942, becoming very popular. Another book followed in 1949, then a total of 19 by the same author. A total of 154 books have been written as of 2013, although by different authors. Later in life, Warner became a volunteer for the Red Cross. She died on August 30, 1979, at the age of 89, and is buried in Grove Street Cemetery in Putnam.

Very good buy for the price  May 31, 2008
My grandson wanted to read the "Boxcar children" series. I ordered
these online. The shipping was fast and they arrived in
wonderful condition. He's enjoying owning these very much.
Thanks for the good buy.
Classic series - kids love it!  Apr 11, 2008
I have been teaching over 20 years and have used this series for at least half that time. Just read the first book to your students and they are hooked! I have a huge collection of Boxcar Children books and several duplicates which they love to read in twos or threes. Of course, the best of the series are the first 3 but my students still enjoy the others. Right now I am in the middle of the Yellow House Mystery (book #3) and they would not let me stop reading today. They started chanting, "Read it, read it!!" I'm talking about 2nd graders...7 or 8 years old sitting with rapt attention and then cheering, moaning, looking frightened, etc. It's absolutely amazing. I'm going to buy two new sets of books 1-4 and 5-8 to keep just for myself and give to my grandchildren some day. I love these books. Go, Gertrude!
Good Books  Mar 28, 2008
I enjoyed reading these books when I was young. Now my children and I are enjoying them together.
Good gift for young readers  Jan 7, 2008
I gave this to my younger brother who is in the 6th grade. He likes to read mysteries and has to read every night. He liked to read these books, since they are not too scary and are at an appropriate reading level for him.
Avid reader and I loved this series as a child.  Nov 22, 2007
I have always been an avid reader and I was thrilled to find this series for sale on this site. I read them when I was about 10 years old and I was engrossed. The first book is the best. I bought these for my granddaughter so that she can enjoy them as much as I did and get a sense of my childhood "world".

She hasn't read them yet, they're a christmas gift. I hope they increase her love of books so that she grows up in a world that opens new adventures every time she cracks a spine.

They are good, clean reading and I would recommend them to any child (boys or girls) around 8 - 12 years old.
