Reviews - What do our customers think?
It's different, but still worth buying  Oct 18, 2008
I must admit that I expected this CD to sound like his last, which I must say I loved. Once I got beyond my own expectations, I began to really enjoy the CD. I would recommend this CD.
One for the Masses  May 16, 2008
This is going to be a harsh review, and I am one who makes every effort to stay nice. But, in this case, one of the music world's most talented artists has taken a turn for the worse, and so I am going to shoot straight on this one.

Kiss your admiration of Max's daring and avant garde approach to music goodbye and embrace the project that should have been more aptly titled "Gotta keep the CCM fans happy", or, "Feelin' A Little Johnny." On his previous releases Max rocks baby, don't get me wrong, but on this album, it's more 'roll', as in roll over.

As other reviewers have noted, the allusions to J. Cash are many and overwhelming and overdone. The radio release "the Cross" with Mike Tait is painfully cookie-cutter CCM in it's arrangement, just what the public will probably eat right up. And to add insult to injury, an American Idol runner-up comes on board to complete the act on another of the album's tracks.

Perhaps the recent year's additions of a wife, two kids, and the related expenses and responsibilities have created in Max a need to be less Avante and more "on Guard". But while I understand that the fam's gotta eat, for goodness sake, how painful to see the farm sold-out in the process.

Lots of complaints as you can see.

Realize, I believe in Max and think the guy has a rare talent. But I can hardly believe this album is a genuine product of who Kevin wants to be. I am looking forward to the next act in this brilliant guy's career, but hopefully with less "act" next time around.
Why doesn't Kevin Max get more attention?  May 13, 2008
If it weren't for getting this album free, I would never have listened to it. This album has caused me to buy his other solo albums.

What this album isn't: Trite, christianese, marketable, fluff. that's exactly why it's an incredible album.

What CCM lacks these days is creativity. Kevin Max has this and more. At times one might think he's trying too hard to showcase his creativity, but you cannot argue with the finished product.

From start to finish we're bombarded with tracks that defy your initial expectations, taking the listener from one end of the musical spectrum to the other. I have no idea what the original songs sound like, but I do enjoy KM's take on them nonetheless.

We need more fearless artists such as this in the Christian music industry. Perhaps then we won't have as much junk as we do.
Suprised- really good album  Feb 28, 2008
I'm not going to lie, Kevin Max's voice usually REALLY bugs me, because he has more ornaments than a christmas tree. I'm not even sure why I decided to listen to this CD in the first place, but I was incredibly surprised.

What Kevin Max has managed to create in this album is a rare collection of tastefully arranged old hymns. He really did have quite a few people join him on it, but I don't see that as a problem, as some people seem to think.

Definitely check out "People Get Ready," which was probably my favorite track off the whole CD. "Run on for a Long Time" was also very good.

As for the comparison to Johnny Cash, I will completely agree. But I still don't understand why that's a bad thing. Johnny Cash was amazing, and in my opinion, more people could afford to mimic him.
Respect the art  Feb 20, 2008
Respect art! Most people buy music because it makes us bang our heads, drive faster, tap our feet ect. Most don't buy music to respect the days gone by. I put five stars because I love the guts to release a record not a disc. This record is a mix of gospel, country, and a little bluegrass. Don't forget that Kevin is into releasing various styles of music. His vocals are awesome as always. Buy it to meditate, reflect, and appreciate a style that will never age. We miss you Mr.Cash, thanks Kevin for keeping that voice with us.
