Reviews - What do our customers think?
could be better  Feb 8, 2007
after trudging through the 560 pages of essays, i decided that of the 31 essays in this volume, about 7 were worth reading. Now, this probably reflects my own predispositions (and shortcomings), but those 7 essays were what kept me from giving this book only 2 stars.

to be generous, i am sure graham ward had to cobble together a wide survey of what is being written in various fields, which meant cobbling together the good with the bad, but i guess in order to do good theology, you have to have the bad. it seems to me that theology (as a discipline) has become an orphanage for continental philosophers who were outed by their analytical colleagues. This is unfortunate, in the sense that much of the language employed in these essays is very opaque and not helpful. Perhaps this language is a masked laziness for these continental philosophers. Which makes me think that if God is dead, it is because of this opaque, lazy, and unhelpful language.

But there were a small handful of essays that seemed to give a glimmer of hope to theology, and this small group of individuals made, for me, this book worth buying. Here they are:

Gavin D'Costa - postmodernity and religious plurality
William C. Placher - Visiting Prisoners
Graham Ward - Suffering and Incarnation
Richard Kearney - Transfiguring God
Laurence Paul Hemming - The Subject of Prayer
John D. Caputo - the poetics of the impossible and the kingdom of God
Carl Raschke - Indian Territory

This volume did open me up to other authors that i probably wouldn't come across, and the short introductions before each article was very helpful as a kind of sketch of each scholar. and for this, i am thankful
