Reviews - What do our customers think?
Half okay  Dec 26, 2007
The Birth of Jesus: Biblical and Theological Reflections, edited by George Brooke, is a collection of papers, obviously on the Birth of Jesus. These papers were presented at a Symposium in Manchester in 2000. This Symposium, and book, had great potential, and the fist half of the book (sections 1 and 2) were very good. The last half was a useless waste of paper. I would have given the book 3 stars or less, especially given only 60 pages of worthwhile material for a ridiculous $40 plus book (typically overpriced by T&T Clark) but since there are so few other books out there like this, I think it might be a 4 star. The papers on Theology of the Circumcision by G. Ward and DNA of our DNA by A. Peacoke were excellent. In contrast, the second half leads with The Value of Being Virginal by T. Klutz, which was one of the most self-important, unreadable pretentious drivels I have tried to read in some time, and much like the rest of the book (sections 3 and 4). I swear these professors pulled some inane topics off the wall just to get a trip to the Symposium, then at the last minute threw a bunch of lofty sounding phrases down at random, trying to sound distinguished and scholarly without saying anything, knowing no one would ever stay awake during their presentation anyway. Unfortunately, these are now preserved as papers in a back of this book. Read the first half, forget the last.
