Item Description...
Bob Ballard has often come to the discussion of instrumental music to accompany singing in worship. In 25 years of Bible College teaching the discussion has surfaced in the classroom often. Being in instrumental churches most of his life, he also has many friends in the non-instrumental churches of Christ. He is now attending both fellowships. Both groups love the Lord and have a desire to follow the scriptures in seeking God's will and attempting to please Him. This book is an attempt to get dialogue between the two groups. In recent years much progress has been made in bringing fellowship and unity between two groups with the same roots, but have been far apart over a disagreement over the use of the instrument with the signing of the worship service. This book refers to the over 180 places in the Bible where instrumental music is used to praise God. The book tries to arrive at the conclusion a man would derive if he had never read the Bible before and now reads it for the first time, using all the scriptures in the Bible on instrumental music. The motive behind the writing of this book by Bob Ballard is to develop fellowship and unity between brothers.

Why is it necessary to build a case for instrumental music in worship?  Mar 17, 2010
I know Mr. Ballard personally and while I admire him and consider him a brother in the faith, I don't believe this book presents a clear justification for instrumental worship.

That said, I enjoy instrumental music of many kinds outside of worship. What folk fail to comprehend is that David invented instruments for worship, but these were never brought into the temple itself. Instruments were restricted to the outer courts and never brought into the temple proper. When we worship God, we enter the holy place (in our hearts and attitude) to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Christ has opened the veil and we have direct access to God. Additionally, it is of historical significance that instrumental music in worship was considered irreverent and unauthorized by all the early church fathers, and all of the early reformers. John Wesley famously suggested that he didn't mind instruments in church "as long as they are silent". Only in the last century and a half has instrumental music been made practically ubiquitous in Christian churches.

My biggest objection to Mr. Ballard's defense of music in the church is that he, like others, forgets that worship is not about what pleases us, but about making our worship a pleasing sacrifice to God. Note that I said "sacrifice". It is not about us or what we like. It is about giving God our undivided attention and praise. What passes for worship music in most churches, today especially, is performance oriented and is not conducive to congregational participation. Rather it turns worshipers into simple spectators in what was designed by God as an ecclesiastical experience of fellowship focusing on God and His Son Jesus Christ.

Mr. Ballard does not make the case at all, in my opinion. Al too often we are told we cannot judge what others do, but at the same time, they forget the cardinal rule that if we do anything that would cause another believer's conscience to be offended, then we are the ones who are in the wrong, not the one you consider a weaker person in the faith. (Romans 14:13,19,21) It is much easier to exclude instruments in order to avoid contention than to force those who do not believe they should be used to "deal with it".
The Bible Case for Instrumental Music  Apr 8, 2009
This book is written from a distinctly Church of Christ perspective. I admire the author's desire to try to unify his denomination on this issue, but it is not really a comprehensive study of the subject. See my book, "The Biblical Foundations of Instrumental Music in Worship: Four Pillars" instead for a balanced, exhaustive study of this subject. (The Biblical Foundations of Instrumental Music in Worship: Four Pillars)
