Item Description...
With this suspenseful, action-packed finale, Oliver North concludes the trilogy that has included his best-selling novels Mission Compromised and The Jericho Sanction. In 2005, the fourth anniversary of the September 11th attacks on America is met with the news that Jihadists have attacked multiple targets in Saudi Arabia, destroying oil pumping equipment, crippling pipelines, and assassinating most of the royal family. In the U.S. gas prices soar to over $6 a gallon along with hyper-inflation across the world financial markets. "Non-business travel" in the U.S. is limited to no more than 500 miles per week. The UN Security Council authorizes an international intervention force, and in a closed session of Congress the "Assassination Bill" is introduced. A "Termination or Neutralization Unit" is formed with Gen. Peter Newman as its head. He is given authority for up to 100 specialists, which he recruits and trains. It is discovered Iranians plan to detonate a nuke in Washington. Newman and a team are dispatched and a chase across Europe and international waters ensues. Newman hunts his illusive nemesis to Mexico and Cuba, but the Iranians have a backup plan in place and ready a plane repainted as a FedEx cargo jet and armed with a nuclear weapon-headed for Washington.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
the assassins  Jan 12, 2007
As with Norths two other books, this one holds your intrest and makes for an easy read. highly recomend.
Great Book  Jan 9, 2007
As one of the other reviewers put it perfectly, it is a chilling tale. I found it hard to put down. Very exciting and has some great characters. You do not have to read Ollie's previous books to be able to get into this one.
poor research and poor extrapolation of events when it was written  Dec 31, 2006
The book was written in 2005, and set just 2 years in the future. The plot's logic argued that elections in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2005 stabilised those countries and turned them into functioning democracies. Which in turn put pressure on Iran. As I write this review, it is almost 2007. With the benefit of hindsight, neither Iraq or Afghanistan is close to being stable or a democracy. To paraphrase Vladimir Putin earlier this year, "Nobody envies the Iraqi democracy".

So if you read the book, perhaps garner a few chuckles from how the postulated backdrop diverged so drastically in reality.

But I am amazed at how many of the other reviewers commented on the "factual" background. No one noticed this howler. One passage remarks that Iranian students are demonstrating against their government. And that one of their causes is universal suffrage; i.e. letting women vote. Pull the other leg, mate, it's got bells! For 25 years, in several Iranian elections, women HAVE voted. A moot issue in Iran. This reveals the depth of research that North and his co-author put into the book. Or lack thereof.

Put it another way. If you picked up a novel on the US, and it said that women currently do not have the vote, and the book is explicitly not alternative history, how knowledgeable would you regard the author? And how believable would be the rest of the plot?

Consider all the earlier favourable reviews. The total ignorance of this issue by those reviewers is evidence before your very eyes of how much they know about the Middle East. The book and those reviews could be regarded as the ignorant leading the ignorant. You've surely heard the assertion that Americans know little about the rest of the world. Well, here's more data.
Believable, Fast-Paced Novel  Dec 15, 2006
Assassins is perhaps the most believable terrorist attack novel I have read. The plot seems right out of the daily news of Iranian threats, rogue Russian KGB officers, lost Russion nukes, Mid-East turmoil, and domestic conflicts about how to fight the war against Islamic radicals.

North knows the ins and outs of the military and political organizations and functions and adequately puts them into the book.

The action of the book rapidly changes locations and characters. North helps the reader keep track by having sub-chapter headings of place, date, time, so readers always know where the action is, but at times it seems like a string of memos and bullet points rather than a story. This led to me skimming many of the pages to get the heart of the matter. I would rather have a more fluid story.

North's writing in 2005 optimistically predicted quicker success in developing more stable Iraqi government and Afghan government. Readers will notice this error, but it does not really affect the story negatively.

The main characters are consistent with the previous books in the series. Readers who enjoyed those books should also enjoy The Assassins.
Fast paced action focused on the Middle East  Dec 3, 2006
I enjoyed reading all three books in this series which concluded with The Assassins. North and Musser make a great team. North's real world military experiences surely contribute to the vivid descriptions and believable characters. Musser is a fine writier and knows how to spin a yarn. The result is ACTION and ADVENTURE involving the Middle East and characters as fresh as our current news media. The Assassins is fast paced and sure to please. Enjoy reading it for yourself!
