Overview
In our fast-paced multimedia age, Charles Denison argues, preachers need to turn to the use of images to capture and keep the listeners' attention. Denison shows how the preacher's imagination, intuition, and feelings can provide powerful resources for creating sermons that not only are fresh and interesting but also trigger evocative images in the minds of the congregation. This right-brained approach will help pastors free their own imaginations to deliver sermons that aren't bound by traditional rules of preaching. Not only does this revitalize the preacher, but it also awakens the imaginations of the listeners, allowing them to see new ways to connect their faith to the world in which they live and work. This book contains practical exercises that help turn each chapter into a creative workshop for developing good ideas into great sermons, along with sample sermons written by the author.

Preacher as Artist  Mar 8, 2006
This book is to preaching what Annie Dillard's "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" is to hiking and the outdoors. You can see the outdoors as a scientist, or one who slows to ponder. Maybe the goal is not so much to understand and digest, but more to be seized in the soul. Chuck Denison, like all preachers, has been trained to preach to and from a left-brain comprehension--a Modernist method to be sure. He invites the preacher to consider a different approach--not the scientist, not the homiletician, but preaching as painting on a canvas.
No doubt inspired by Julia Cameron's, "The Artist's Way," he takes this other perspective, and offers a series of invitations to ponder a different way. Not the way of the linear, but a more visceral, affective, tactile means to grapple with our life stories and the announcing of God's Word.
I walked with Annie Dillard along Tinker Creek and saw in her words insights never beheld before. Denison's little tome does the same thing to the art of shaping a sermon. Good bye three points and poem; hello deep calls to the deep in the text and proclammation. Give Denison's book a walk along the stroll of crafting of the sermon.
