Item Description...
We all need companions and guides on our spiritual journey. W. Paul Jones believes that spiritual direction is essential for every Christian. "Along each person's pilgrimage are those who can make one's journey accountable and whose hospitality makes it possible," Jones says. In The Art of Spiritual Direction, you'll discover the answers to these questions and more: What is spiritual direction? What is the difference between spiritual direction and counseling? How can you know if you are called to the ministry of spiritual direction? What should happen in direction sessions? The appendixes feature helpful tools like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a Theological Worlds Inventory, the Enneagram, and other resources. Whether you are a pastor, church leader, or a layperson, you will benefit from the wealth of information contained in this book.

Publishers Description
Paul Jones offers a fundamental and comprehensive approach to spiritual direction. He describes the eight major types of spiritual direction and indicates basic characteristics expected of a spiritual director. In addition to providing insights for personal spiritual direction, Jones advances a chapter for doing communal spiritual direction based on John Wesley's model of covenant groups.

While examining foundational principles of spiritual direction, Jones's book rests in concrete clarity. He concerns himself with teaching people how to do spiritual direction. Jones explores Christian faith as a process of redemption, detailing how spiritual direction particularizes healing for each unique person.

This comprehensive manual employs case studies. The book includes appendixes that include Group Consensus Discernment, Myers-Briggs usages, the Enneagram, TDF Inventory, Family Systems, and the Jo-Hari Window. Jones's approach makes this book an exceptional textbook for colleges and seminaries as well as for those who seek understanding of spiritual direction.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Good intro that occasionally loses focus  Oct 21, 2006
A good intro, but a little scattered. Sometimes the author is focused on the topic at hand, but other times he's delving into details about Methodism or hymnology that are not terribly relevant. However, Jones is clearly good at direction and has a lot of useful advice for both directors and directees (but mostly directors). I especially liked his comment that communities that shy away from doing serious direction for fear of secular concerns like lawsuits need a "theology of risk" to get them back to doing what the church is called to do! (Pace "Frightening!", Jones is actually rather clear about what he thinks secular counseling can achieve and what it cannot. But sometimes there is no clear line between clinical needs and spiritual ones.)
A Rejoinder to Frightening!  Sep 11, 2006
The above entry entitled "frightening" is as hollow and unsubstantiatied as it is vague. I have never written a review before. But I fear that the above review may actually be believed or taken by someone as sufficient cause not to purchase this book. And what a shame that would be! Jones' book is a well-spring: of wisdom, depth, insight, literary brilliance, ecumenical spirit, practical suggestions, and more. I found it illuminating, refreshing, paradoxical, and altogether Spiritual-- and I am not a professional spritual director. In any event, I highly recommend it.
Frightening!  May 16, 2003
Having expected a solid approach to spiritual direction I was frightened to read of the continual overlap of significant clinical issues 'treated' in direction. This book could be useful for a trained professional Christian counselor, but it does a serious disservice to anyone seeking to learn about spiritual direction. The boundary issues alone would relegate this book to a class on lawsuits in the ministry! Using this book as a resource for both information and practice on spiritual direction does a great disservice to the many trained directors who recognize and maintain the boundaries between clinical work (treatment) and direction.
