More About Thomas Aquinas

Thomas Aquinas Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274) lived at a critical juncture of western culture when the arrival of the Aristotelian corpus in Latin translation reopened the question of the relation between faith and reason, calling into question the modus vivendi that had obtained for centuries. This crisis flared up just as universities were being founded. Thomas, after early studies at Montecassino, moved on to the University of Naples in 1244, where he met members of the new Dominican Order. It was at Naples too that Thomas had his first extended contact with the new learning. When he joined the Dominican Order he went north to study with Albertus Magnus, author of a paraphrase of the Aristotelian corpus. Thomas completed his studies at the University of Paris, which had been formed out of the monastic schools on the Left Bank and the cathedral school at Notre Dame. In two stints as a regent master Thomas defended the mendicant orders and, of greater historical importance, countered both the Averroistic interpretations of Aristotle and the Franciscan tendency to reject Greek philosophy. The result was a new modus vivendi between faith and philosophy which survived until the rise of the new physics. The Catholic Church has over the centuries regularly and consistently reaffirmed the central importance of Thomas's work for understanding its teachings concerning the Christian revelation, and his close textual commentaries on Aristotle represent a cultural resource which is now receiving increased recognition.

He was formally canonized in 1323.

Thomas Aquinas was born in 1225 and died in 1274.

A good little prayer book!  Mar 12, 2005
This is a nice little prayer book however I expected it to have more prayers and overall the book just feels incomplete. I have many other prayer books which include several other of the saints prayers that I was hoping to have included so that I may have only one prayer book to carry around. However the prayers that are listed are very nice and include the latin version of the prayer as well. If you are Catholic and ever attend Vespers and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament you will notice some of these prayers. There are other prayer books out there much better than this but I DO NOT consider this a waste of money in the least bit!
Thank you!  Jun 15, 2004
Glad to see that this is back in print! I searched for this book for over five years, even called and annoyed the publisher. Every Catholic library should have a copy.
A great prayer book to carry around to say prayers.
I love this book helps me get closer to God.

Highly Recommended.

An outstanding little devotional. . .  Jul 18, 2003
. . .containing many of the beloved prayers and Eucharistic hymns of St. Thomas Aquinas. The volume is arranged with a section of prayers for various occasions, followed by a section of prayers relating to the Eucharist, followed by a section of Thomas's Corpus Christi hymns, followed by a prayer at time of death.

All selections are given with the Latin text on the left and the English text on the right. For the record, the English-language texts represent a different translation than the ones familiar to Anglo-Catholics as represented in, say, the 1940 hymnal.

Altogether, a very nice and accessible devotional.

Five stars.
