Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Gertrude Chandler Warner was born on April 16, 1890, in Putnam, Connecticut. She came from a musical family and played the cello. Because of illness, she was unable to finish high school, and learned from a tutor. In 1918, because all of the male teachers were away fighting in World War I, she was asked to teach first grade. The majority of children in her class did not speak English well, and she made up "The Box-Car Children" in 1924. The book remained a single title, until it was republished in 1942, becoming very popular. Another book followed in 1949, then a total of 19 by the same author. A total of 154 books have been written as of 2013, although by different authors. Later in life, Warner became a volunteer for the Red Cross. She died on August 30, 1979, at the age of 89, and is buried in Grove Street Cemetery in Putnam.

An OK book, but really boring  Mar 14, 2002
This book has a good story to it, but its way to boring. It needs more exitment to it. The animals and plot was good but their wasn't much els in the book.

My new favorite book  Mar 30, 2000
I thought this was a great book. The Boxcar children is my favorite series, and this was my favorite one. This book would be great for anyone who likes animals. I definitely give it five stars

Pretty good but not great  Jun 8, 1998
It is definetly not the type of book that keeps you at the edge of your seat at all times. It may be a little boring for people who usually read books under 100 pages.

good book  Jan 5, 1997
This is a good book for people who love animals
