Publishers Description
After witnessing the suicide of a churchgoing young woman, Minister Francine Amen blames herself: After this young woman had accused their pastor of sexual abuse, Francine rejected her as a friend. Francine's guilty feelings land her in a mental hospital, and after her release she vows to restore her ministry by making amends to every person she's ever hurt, especially her sister Dawn Amen. Dawn's husband Sly-- formerly Francine's boyfriend--is spending too much time with Francine during her recovery, when he should be making his own amends to Dawn.

Great Christian Book Without All the Fire and Brimstone  Apr 17, 2008
Let me start by saying, I am a Christian, but I tend to shy away from Christian Lit. because it can be so heavy on the finger wagging and the "holier than thou" conotations. This book IS NOT LIKE THAT!!! I loved the Amen Sisters. It is realistic and smartly written. I bought it because it was the assigned book for my Book Club's recent meeting...I honestly would not have even considered it otherwise. I am certainly glad it was chosen and I will be re-reading it. Thumbs up to Angela Benson, she gave me a new outlook on Christian Fiction.
A powerful story of betrayal and forgiveness  Feb 23, 2008
A powerful, gripping story of betrayal and forgiveness, "The Amen Sisters" by Angela Benson is truly unforgettable.

Five years ago, Francine Amen renounced her family and friends to follow Bishop Payne's ministry. That decision would leave her questioning her faith and would cost Francine her best friend, Toni. After three years in a mental institution to help Francine deal with her guilt over Toni's suicide, her sister, Dawn brings her back home to the place where it all began, to help her rebuild her life and make amends.

As Francine deals with the repercussions of being led astray by a false man of God, Dawn is dealing with her own form of betrayal. Dawn's husband, Sylvester--Francine's ex-fiance--had an extramarital affair. Already insecure that Sylvester really loved her, Dawn struggles to forgive his transgression and work towards healing their marriage.

Can the Amen sisters get past the betrayals and grasp the power of forgiveness to move on with their lives? Will Francine ever be accepted by the family and friends she turned away from? Can Dawn ever forget that Sylvester found love in the arms of another woman? And will Dawn and Francine allow God to help show them the way?

I had never read one of Angela Benson's novels before "The Amen Sisters". Now, I want to own all of them. No wonder she has been called, "One of the most talented writers of fiction."

This story drew me in right away with its well-developed characters and its all too realistic storyline. Benson is a master storyteller who creates, with "The Amen Sisters", two women you sympathize with and whose strength you admire.

A tale of unforgettable characters, love, forgiveness, and faith, "The Amen Sisters" is an inspiring story of hope that all readers will enjoy.
Good book, but rather predictable  Feb 17, 2008
I enjoyed reading this book, but I must admit, I found some of the story lines a bit over the top and unrealistic. Moreover, it was somewhat predictable and followed the rhythem of many Christian works of fiction. The ending was somewhat contrived and disappointing, but overall, the ride getting you to the end was good.
Wow...  Jan 27, 2008
I bought this book in October 2007. I put it in my book cover to carry around with me to read...and somehow forgot about it. While cleaning out my car in January, I saw it and put it aside because I was reading another book. But when I opened it...OH MY GOODNESS! A page turner like no other. You are absolutely HOOKED from the first page...and it's so close to feel like you are in the action...there was NEVER a dull moment. I was disappointed when I finished the book....because there was nothing else to READ! :) It was quite an enjoyable read...and I love the way the author handled those situations...nothing was too farfetched....everything in it is a real situation that I could see happening....LOVED IT!
Very edgy story!  Dec 25, 2007
The Amen Sisters has a killer beginning and moves along at a pretty fast pace for a while. There is plenty of drama to move the story forward and the tension is realistic and well done. The story slowed a bit in the middle when it got heavy on the church scenes and talking a lot about forgiveness and issues from the past. Then the action picked up again.

I prefer to be in the middle of the action and experience conflict and agony along with the characters. There was potential for emotional suffering at first, but the slower parts were hard for me to get through. That's just the way I see things.

I enjoyed the conflict between Dawn, Sly, Freddy, and Walter. However, I'm a pretty forgiving person so Dawn's ongoing anger started bugging me. I was glad when she and Sly began seeking the Lord more in their relationship, which is the best way to heal from that type of rift. The point the author made about stepping out in faith to rebuild trust and choosing to love was excellently done.

Overall I enjoyed this novel. I liked how the author tied some scenes back to Genesis House, which was from an earlier book the author wrote. But it would've been better with a little less talk and more action in the middle to keep the story from sagging. Regardless, The Amen Sisters ranks high in edgy content, so I'd recommend it to people who enjoy reading about real life issues.
