Item Description...
The longawaited third volume of Leigh Churchill's popular saga is another pageturning romp through the wild and woolly history of the church. Have you ever wondered why the Crusades were fought? Or why there is a 'Chteau Neuf du Pape' ('the Pope's new house') in France? Have you ever heard of the Children's Crusade? What did the feudal system have to do with the medieval church? Read on to find out the answers to these and many other fascinating questions. Meet brilliant, arrogant Abelard and the scholarly Anselm, the fearsome Hildebrand, the gentle Francis Assisi, the courageous Martin Luther. These and many other vibrant characters leap out of these pages to take you back into their time and their chapter of what we call church history, which is about so much more than the church. Churchill writes in an engaging, lively, and readaloud style. He combines impeccable scholarship with an ear for a good story to bring this history alive.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A Rollicking Quest  Mar 29, 2010
I had this book for some time without reading it, as a cursory glance seemed to indicate that it was skimpy on the content side. It looked like the kind of book that you would pick up here and there to read a bit out of and let it sit for a while. However, when I began reading it yesterday I was surprised to find that today I had finished it!

Churchill writes in an easy going conversational voice that actually hides the fact that there is more information packed into this book that you would think. Often, history writing seems to focus on names, dates, positions and movements illustrated by the people involved in them, whereas Churchill has done the opposite. He tells about the people first in engaging stories that act like a sugar coating allowing for the harder pill of historical details to go down easier. This does give the book more of an introductory nature, and it will likely not be used as a text in a church history class, but if what you want is an overview that will keep your attention with drama and not put you to sleep with minutia, then dive right in.

In the course of the book, I found many spots where the way the story of a particular person was being told was so engrossing that I completely lost track of time. Some of the things people went through in this period, in both being caught up in the sweep of history and in the struggles of their individual lives, are at times both inspiring and at others mind numbing.

The continuing degradation of the medieval church hierarchy, including many of its priests, cardinals, and Popes, is very disappointing. This particularly so when sincere Christians, attempting to bring their church back into line with Biblical standards of ethics, are continually persecuted by people defending their wealth and power who should not have been in church offices to begin with. In fact, this record of corruption becomes so sordid that it starts to effect the language that Churchill uses to describe it. You can tell that he is becoming upset with it and at points you wonder if all sides are being given a fair say.

"Age of Knights" is the third book in a series. It covers from 1000 to 1517 AD. The prior two books are "The Blood of the Martyrs" and "The Birth of Europe." If you want something that has a similar easy reading feel and sense of immersion, but has more academic clout behind it, try Gonzalez' two volume "The Story of Christianity."
