More About Stephen R. Covey

Stephen R. Covey Over his lifetime, Stephen inspired millions with the power of universal principles. As he traveled the globe many times over, his message was a simple one: for true success and meaning in life, we must be principle-centered in all areas of life. A teacher at heart, he often taught: "there are three constants in life: change, choice and principles."

From the oval office, the board room, community halls and to the school house and family room, Stephen taught the mindset, skillset and toolset found in the 7 habits of Highly effective people, his seminal work. His legacy is woven in the 7 habits, and, just as these habits are universal and timeless, so is Stephen r. Covey, who is admired around the world for his simple, yet powerful, universal, timeless teachings.

Recognized as one of Time magazine’s 25 most influential Americans, Stephen R. Covey was one of the world’s foremost leadership authorities, organizational experts, and thought leaders.

Covey was the author of acclaimed books, including the international best seller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which has sold more than 25 million copies in 40 languages throughout the world. Other best sellers authored by Covey include First Things First, Principle-Centered Leadership, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families, and The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness.

Millions of people and thousands of clients throughout the world have personally experienced Covey's approach and commitment to teaching universal principles. His approach has been enormously empowering and it transcends differences of every kind--political, philosophical, religious, socio-economic, generational, gender, lifestyle, etc.

Over the years, clients from around the world—including from India, Japan, Korea, Africa, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and beyond—have commented to Stephen Covey that The 7 Habits intimately relate to their culture, country, organization, and family. He responded, "You recognize these principles because they are common to every society that prospers and endures." These universal, timeless principles have stood the test of time with millions of people around the world and will continue to do so in the future.

Stephen Covey passed away on July 16, 2012, with his loving wife, children and their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren present. His legacy to the world is Principle-Centered Leadership and his many contributions will live on through the principles he loved, taught and espoused.

Excellent Practical Guide  Mar 2, 2010
7 Habits of Highly Effective Families As a pastor I have not only read and studied much on the family but am called on to recommend resources in my counseling. There is no book on the family that I have suggested or even given away as much I have this one. It is exceedingly practical. If you are a student of the 7 Habits material you will find this much more accessible. One of the bits of wisdom that I have appreciated from this book is that a good barometer of the health of your family is how you treat the child that tests you the most. From the very healthy to the struggling family there will much to apply in this treatment of the 7 Habits.
Mostly common sense  Feb 13, 2010
This audiobook by Stephen Covey is delivered by Covey himself, and appears to have been written specifically for the audio format rather than abridged from the print book.

Covey presents mostly good advice, but I personally found the vast majority of it to be just common sense (put family first, be a good role model, prioritize, be proactive, be willing to change, be patient, honor committments, really listen to people, avoid hurtful comments, aim for win-win outcomes, spend time one on one, have family meetings, have fun together, etc.), and it also has a bit of a cookbook feel. I had some of my existing ideas reinforced, but I didn't learn much.

In terms of his tone, Covey is certainly well intentioned, but I find him somewhat preachy, and he asserts his opinions and advice without supporting evidence or arguments (other than occasional anecdotes), so this book is clearly in the genre of self-help rather than philosophy or empirical social science.

If your family has serious problems, this audiobook might help, but I'd consider other resources also. Surely there are other books out there which offer deeper and more transformative insights? If your family is already functioning fairly well and you just want to enhance it, this book may come across as too shallow to be of much help.
Thought provoking  Dec 1, 2009
I admit I like to read books in this genre. This book helped me to understand (even if I don't agree with) the conservative emphasis on "family" and "traditional family". I like what he has to say about character and I was very interested when he segued into real life anecdotes from his own family.

I think this book is a little unfortunate in that if you don't fit a model for a traditional family you may feel as if you are not worthy. I think a judgement about divorce, etc. could have been withheld and the book would not have suffered.

I have not studied this book completely, I read the first quarter and the moralizing about family values began to interfere with the exploration about habits and character. I separate "family values" from "habits and character" because in many cases the decision to end a marriage is a very positive one for some people. Sometimes it is the right thing to do. I would not pass this book onto a divorced friend, I think it would make them feel bad. For a traditional family this book has plenty of great insights that I am sure are well documented by previous reviewers.
Great book, terrible audiobook  Jun 9, 2009
I was very disappointed. I'm a big fan of Covey's but I did expect this audio program to be longer and deeper providing more knowledge and inspiration.

This book is simply a very short REVIEW of the book, repeating, not explaining, for the most part, Stephen's principles - only a real devout of The Seven habitsmight get any use from this refresher.

I know that Audio books are sometimes condensed or abridged but this is so short and shallow, I feel cheated
The Audio Book is a 80% copy of "highly effective people"  Apr 24, 2009
"The 7 habits of highly effective people" is among my favourite books which I always read again and again. Same with the Audio Book of "The 7 habits of highly effective people", which I have stored in my IPod and listen to it, again and again. So my expectations were high, when I ordered book and audio book of "7 habits of highly effective families". I really appreciate the insights for family and partnership in the book, but I was terribly disappointed by the audio book! The author sounds bored, not as energetic as in the original. And the wording, yes, most sentences are 80% same with the audio book of "highly effective people". This book would have deserved a better audio book version!
