Item Description...
"Mark Feldmeir knows this generation of exiles quite well. His blending of insights into the particular spiritual yearnings and challenges of this generation with Christian theology, and his linkage of premodern scripture with postmodern dilemmas make this a fine book for all of us who attempt to speak to young adults." -William Willimon, Duke University

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Saw it in action and then read about it!  Jul 17, 2003
I was very excited to get this book as soon as I heard about it. I actually attended Rev Feldmeir's church once when I was visiting family in So Cal. We only spent one service there, but were very moved by the love and excitment of the people. It was clearly a church in love with its Lord and each other---and from the sermon I heard that day, I felt a lot of that had to do with the pastor and what kind of man he is. Having read the book and being exposed so many more of his sermons, I understand much better why this church has grown from 20 to 200 families under his care (see back cover). While the style and modern cultural references may not appeal to all Christians (even to some sincerely postmodern GenXers!), there is no mistaking the power in the written thoughts of a man in love with his God, who is able to experience God in all of modern life---then share it in such a way that others can also enjoy the hints of glory manifested thru the Robin Williamses, Lance Armstrongs and even Coka-Colas of the world. I'm grateful for the time I was able to "spend" with Rev Feldmeir even back here in Iowa, and I would definitely recommend the wit, wisdom, and depth of thought & insight that this talented young pastor has put between these covers.
A Gen Xer writes for his and other generations  Jul 9, 2003
Before retiring from Perkins School of Theology I worked for many years with Gen X pastors and led numerous seminars to help congregations understand and minister to Xers. I have also had the privilege of working with Mark and seeing him in action in his ministry. This collection of sermons comes out of the search of his generation for dealing with faith issues. He understands that the medium of communication with Gen X is popular culture. It is because of this he takes the time to use movies, music, and events that connect with the issues and questions of his generation. He has mastered the craft of weaving personal experience and cultural motifs into a mosaic that touches, heals, and points one toward the gospel. His references to the various movie segments (another primary source or the way Xers engage the issues of life) are hints that encourage others to see these movies in another light. Finally, the sermons are well crafted with a writing skill that reasonants with the ear (the means of preaching). Reading these sermons became an experience of a devotional nature for both myself and my wife. I was surprised to discover that my wife (an astute critic of preaching with little substance) was so engaged by these sermons that she wants to send copies to many preachers we know. That is probably the highest compliment I could give to a preacher. In these sermons Mark sets a standard of combining substance and style that engages the reader and encourages others to follow his example in his or her preaching. It is worth trying because it will engage all generations in their faith journey.
Unfortunately Disappointing  Jun 3, 2003
I ordered this book the day I discovered it was available. I loved the title, "Testimony to the Exiles" and still think this is a good way to think about the reality of Gen X's experience and the Christian message. Feldmeir's introduction was compelling, articulating key issues of both the generation and the task / dilemma and struggle of a preacher (and very much worth reading, pondering, and discussing). Unfortunately I found the sermons disconnected to his thoughts in the introduction and simply a rehash of the Baby Boomer style of preaching advocated by too many (do we really need Hollywood, Microsoft, video clips, and thousands of dollars of AV equipment to share the Good News?). One disappointment came in Feldmeir's use of media / popular culture in his sermons. Generation X is one of the most media savvy generations and is looking for the authentic. Most of the media examples feel contrived and insult the reader, the faith, and the original intent of the media (Images of Coca Cola for worship). More disappointing were sermons that are stories, quotes, etc. strung together without the struggle, ambiguity and real faith life experience I wanted. I don't care what those others think and feel about the faith - I can read the books Fledmeir quotes, watch the movies and listen to the songs myself - what is his experience? the experience of the community? My bottom line, is that Testimony to the Exiles is a great idea that was too highly influenced by the Baby Boomers who are still setting the agenda for our generation.
Intelligently written and thought-provoking  Apr 17, 2003
I found this book to be an honest exploration of Christian values and lifestyles (and more importantly, the blending of the two). Mark Feldmeir's sermons follow a consistent formula: A present-day problem or occurrence is presented, followed by an account of how the issue was evidenced and resolved in the Bible, and summed up with an inspirational challenge to us to go out and make a needed change. The sermons require that we face our daily challenges and opportunities with honesty and an open mind. We are required to see the naked truth, even when it is uncomfortable. Mark Feldmeir has a way of provoking us to change; both within and without. The challenge becomes: How will we proceed, given what we now know?

I heartily recommend this book to anyone who knows he has work to do. It's a beautiful roadmap for pointing us in the right direction.
