Overview
Those who turn to spiritual classics for guidance and inspiration often find their style daunting. The original texts still have much to offer but their diction and idiom, chosen for another era and audience, pose an obstacle to many contemporary readers. Teresa of Avila's "Way of Perfection" for Everyone is the first in a series that aims to make some of the greatest Christian teachers accessible to all. The Way of Perfection was written in the sixteenth century as an introductory text on life and prayer for Teresa of Avila's sisters, young Carmelite novices setting out on the contemplative path. This re-telling of her classic in modern idiom makes the kernel of her teaching accessible to the many contemporary readers who feel called to a deeper, more Godcentered life.

Classic on Prayer in Updated Language  Apr 1, 2007
The introduction of this little book contains key points about Teresa's spiritual journey, her setting down the "Way of Perfection," and the purpose of this version, written by Elizabeth Obbard. Teresa's struggles to live a spiritual life led her to become a Carmelite and ultimately reform the order, adapting its hermit roots to a sixteenth century community of women. Teresa's Way focuses on teaching beginners to pray and emphasizes the intertwining of life and prayer. Obbard's version, part of the Classics for Everyone series, re-tells the original in modern diction and idiom while preserving Teresa's style.

Revisiting Teresa's message in Obbard's language has brought me back to the basics of prayer. The first section addresses dispositions for a life of prayer and ways to get started. Here the author imparts such wisdom as our call to love those God has given us "and not meddle with the affairs of everyone who is only slightly related and who won't thank us for our busy-bodying." She also emphasizes that all of us must aspire to sanctity, "so get down to it in earnest." For those with "butterfly minds" who are plagued by distractions during prayer, she recommends learning to say prayers well. "Don't try to enter into all kinds of convoluted reasoning, which tires you out. It isn't your fault if you don't seem able to get close to God." In keeping with that theme, she completes the Way with reflections on the words of the Lord's Prayer, reminding us that repeating this prayer daily with sincerity and understanding will allow us to "speedily attain to contemplation."
