Item Description...
Good preaching leaves an indelible imprint on audiences, empowering them with relevant, life changing truths. Narrative preaching, re-telling and reapplying the great truths and lessons of God's Word from the lives of His people, has always been among the most effective ways of preaching. What are the keys to making Bible stories applicable? How does one present these lessons in a way that audiences connect with and can learn from? Telling the Old, Old Story by David Larsen, verteran pastor and professor of homilectics, shows pastors and Bible teachers how to transfer the biblical truth into narrative stories that dispense insight, understanding, and personal significance to the hearts and minds of listeners. This step by step guide highlights not only the principles but also the power of narrative preaching, and includes proven methods for engaging the congretation or classroom in active application. This study will show pastors and Bible teachers how to construct compelling narrative sermons. Transform your preaching today!

The "art" of narrative preaching  Oct 18, 2006
I guess the subtitle give a clue to the focus of this book. It is more about the overall contours and large defining theological premises of narrative preaching than being specific about "how to" craft a narrative sermon. I was a little disappointed that Larsen puts so little input into mechanics, though. It seems at times Larsen is simply interested in letting the reader know how widely read he is. Quotes, quips and illustrations abound. Some are used to further his points, others are used for him to counter. It seems he's having an ongoing discussion with several authors and the reader is merely eavesdropping on the debate.

This book may be helpful for preachers who are already familiar with the technique of writing narrative sermons, to provide further nuancing of the motive and theory behind narrative preaching. But if you're new to narrative preaching or are more interested in a guide that explains what makes a good narrative sermon, this book isn't for you. It's a book about the "art" not the "technique" of narrative preaching.
Inspiring Material But Not A Lot of How To's  Feb 26, 2002
Larsen packs this book with quotables, illustrations, and assessments of well-known or respected authorities. Although he drops a lot of names and offers numerous "golden nuggets," the book is not a practical "how to" work, nor is it concise and to the point.

Larsen inspires and offers a lot of "jabs," scoldings, and creative contrasts, but if I had not learned how to do narrative exposition elsewhere, I would not have learned it here. He would have left me with a lot of information but no clear procedure--or, if there is a clear procedure, it is buried within quotations, excerpts, and witicisms.

If you want to read this book for enjoyment and inspiration, (or pithy sayings), you will not be disappointed. His theological positions are wonderful. But if you want concrete and to the point procedures, you may be let down.
