Item Description...
Overview
Narrative theology emphasizes the priority of the story of Jesus Christ because the story precedes categorizing or conceptualizing. An exercise in postmodern narrative theology, this book shows how the distinction between narrative and story enables one to read the Bible as a single story that finds its focus in Christ. Loughlin sees the Church as the telling and continuation of Christ's story, with the Bible and the community as the context in which Christ makes himself known and available for faith.

Publishers Description
Narrative theology emphasizes the priority of the story of Jesus Christ because the story precedes any category or conceptualizing. This text is an exercise in postmodern narrative theology. It shows how the distinction between narrative and story enables one to read the Bible as a single story that finds its focus in Christ. Gerard Loughlin draws on the work of Hans Frei, George Lindbeck and John Milbank to articulate a view of the Church as the telling and continuation of Christ's story. He establishes the co-constitution of Bible and community as the context in which Christ makes himself known and available for faith. This book defends the inspiration, historicity and truth of the biblical story as it is performed in the life of the Church, and shows how narrative theology enfolds and unfolds doctrine, while the epilogue focuses on the eucharist.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
great primer for narrative theology  Dec 29, 2007
I first read an essay by Loughlin in Graham Ward's 'Blackwell's Companion to Postmodern Theology.' I thought that essay was interesting enough to track this book down and read it. I'm really glad I did.

What really sold me on Loughlin's book, besides his talent as a good writer, is the way he deals with some of the major criticisms that the narrative theology camp faces from evangelicals:

1) dealing with the relationship between stories and experience
2) outlining the hermeneutic involved for understanding stories rightly
3) the charge of moral relativism among competing narratives
4) the understanding of God's relation to the world

I would recommend this book as a great primer to begin to understand some of the issues at hand in narrative theology. Loughlin does an outstanding job advancing this project in creative ways that brings the reader back to the text and the church.
