Item Description...
Forget those anonymous newspaper headlines about medical miracles and accompany Dr. Craig Collison, his family, colleagues, and friends, on an incredible journey through his death-defying ordeal with flesh-eating bacteria. When a medical disaster ripped this young doctor's body and world to shreds, the steadfast faith of his family circle made it whole again.

Collison was completing his residency and awaiting the birth of his third child, when a routine surgery turned into the kind of unique catastrophe that makes medical headlines. The flesh-eating bacteria that was consuming his healthy body could not obliterate Craig's belief in God, nor shake the faith of his family. Collison's wife Michelle put a journal at his bedside for well-wishers, and herself, to write their thoughts in. Entries from that journal punctuate the gripping and dramatic account of how a fluke bacteria transformed Craig from healthy young doctor to critically-ill patient and how his friends and family kept the faith.

Tattered Flesh, Resilient Spirit is the incredible story of the Collison family's struggle with "flesh-eating" bacteria, a spontaneous and horrible illness that caused massive tissue destruction with deadly and never-ending complications. Raw emotion, both incredible joy and overwhelming sadness, as Michelle's journal entries take you to the heat of the moment, inject you right into this real-life drama. Their astounding faith in the verses used to try to understand why this happened gives witness to the Spirit at work in our lives, allowing Craig to persevere where so few survive.

Tattered Flesh, Resilent Spirit  Jul 15, 2007
We've all seen news stories on the flesh eating bacteria complete with grotesque pictures of human flesh infected with this bacteria as well as the disfiguring operations preformed on individuals while trying to save their lives. Tattered Flesh, Resilient Spirit is the author's story of his battle with this terrifying condition.

With the help of his family and friends, the author details his experiences from first finding out that that little lump on his shoulder blade was actually flesh eating bacteria throughout his entire recovery process. Though the author was one of the lucky survivors of this horrible condition, his recovery did not go smoothly. During the first few months of this account, the author's family was continually told to brace for the worse as the disease, organ failure, dehydration, and malnourishment threatened to destroy his body. Even once his body was stable and he was finally conscious, the author had to continually battle infection, pain, and disfigurement all while trying to regain his strength and learning how to walk once again.

I found Tattered Flesh, Resilient Spirit absolutely fascinating and utterly inspirational.

A good personal account of the victory of spirit over flesh  Jan 21, 2006
When I read the press release about the saga of survival of the author, himself a medical man from flesh-eating bacteria's ravages, I was very much interested in learning more about the interventions that helped him. So, when an opportunity to review the book came up, I was very happy. And I am not at all dis- appointed with the result.

The author succeeds in holding the reader's attention all through with a fairly detailed and at the same time, highly readable account of the main factors that proved critical in his pulling through a gruesome and potentially fatal illness. The excellent medical care, the support of the family, especially his wife Michelle and his own grit pulled him through the ordeal. Faith and prayers played an important part (that is the support part) and Dr.Collison is now quite willing to share these aspects with all patients and thus help them in their own recovery.

I would have preferred to see a more detailed account of the disease and the reconstruction (with possible figures, sketches and photos), since a picture is worth a thousand words. Also, the author could have discussed the possible source of his infection to alert the readers about similar possibilities. The photographs of his family inside the book could have been in color.

The book is very well written and the editors should be complimented. A few typos remained in the book, possibly escaping the proof editor's eyes. I felt that the price is a little on the higher side.

All things considered, I recommend this book as a good buy if you are interested in medical themes.
A Book Of Hope  Dec 27, 2005
This is the story of Craig Collison and his battle against an insurmountable illness that would spread terror through any of us at even the thought of it. I am speaking of the battle against a "flesh eating" bacteria that invaded his body. Horrible!
The author shares the joys of his life before this invasion and takes us through his battle and the miracle of his overcoming this attach against him.
We read journals from his wife, doctor, nurses and others as they struggle to keep their faith and pray for a miracle. He opening allows us to share their fears and battles in hopes that all of their emotions will help others that are in similar circumstances know that their can be hope at the end of the journey.
Truly this is a heartwarming story in so many ways. Dr. Collison is frank and honest in his work, and you will close your eyes and whisper a prayer that you or a loved one will never have to endure such trauma; yet, despite all the darkness you also are privileged to share the love of friends and family, the courage of Dr. Collison, and the faith of so many that made such a difference.
We all have trials in this life, none are exempt, some are harder than others, but in this book we can see the importance that faith, love and unity bring. A book from one man's heart journey that will be a true asset of strength to those facing their own battles in this life and a hope for victory.
Honest, personal account of physical and emotional healing during a critical illness  Jul 5, 2005
Dr Collison offers us a glimps at something we all hope we never have to endure: the sudden critcal illness of a loved one. Jounal entries from his wife, notes from friends, family, doctors and nurses, all accent his own telling of his battle with "flesh eating" bacteria. As a pediatric ICU nurse, I have already found myself sharing parts of this story with my patients' families. Im part to empower them to be involved and ask questions, in part to give them hope. As a human being, this book reminded me of something easily forgotten: the amazing resiliency of the human spirit.
