Item Description...

For the first time, the story of "Tania the guerrilla" is told with tenderness and veracity by a key participant in the revolutionary movement in Latin America.

Tania was born Haydee Tamara Bunke to German Jewish refugees in Argentina in 1937. Her family moved to East Germany after the war, but she was soon drawn to the Cuban Revolution.

She became one of Cuba's most successful spies in Latin America, penetrating Bolivia's high society and even making contact with the country's president and other members of the ruling circle. When her cover was blown she joined Che's guerrilla group but was killed in an ambush in August 1967. She was only 30 years old.

At the time of her death, the CIA suggested Tania had been romantically involved with Che, largely in order to discredit him. Most biographers consider this unlikely.

When Patty Hearst was "kidnapped" by the Symbionese Liberation Army, she adopted the name "Tania" and appeared with a gun and a beret, mimicking the classic pose of the real Tania
Tania, played by Franka Potente ("Run Lola Run"), will be a major character in the Steven Soderbergh/Benicio Del Toro forthcoming movie "Che," which focuses on the Bolivia period

Includes Ulises Estrada's own personal photos and correspondence as well as testimonies from other guerrilla fighters. Appendices include recently declassified Cuban files on the "Bolivia mission."

Ulises Estrada was the principal organizer of Che Guevara's guerrilla mission to Bolivia and also trained and ran Tania as the key undercover agent who was to be sent to Bolivia in advance of Guevara's arrival. Although against the rules in such espionage operations, Tania and Ulises fell in love and planned to make a life together after Tania's return from Bolivia.

fascinating account of Jaydee Tamar Bunke Bider (Tania)  Jul 11, 2006
This book provides in-depth information on an important revolutionary. Often over looked, this historical account helps one better understand revolutionary movements in south america in general, and women's involvement in particular. Fascinating read!
A waste of lives.  May 17, 2006
This is a book that reads like propaganda.
Tania tried to be an urban guerrilla in the wrong place.
La Paz specially in that time period, everybody knew who was what, I was in my last month of High school and preparing for University entrance exams.
Tania was naive, getting involved with bolivian men,and with people that did not have good reputations.
When she writes about "Alvaro Cristian" that she meets is a bus wearing a uniform and that he was from the US,I could not stop laughing, he was a Bolivian that would chase girls and women,we all know he was off, never visited the U.S.
We all avoided him like a pest that he was and knew that he pretended to be a GI.
Foreign military personel can not wear uniforms, except for receptions, etc.
This was a guerrilla that was going to fail, first because they were not Bolivians, lacked support,we had a Revolution in 1952, had Agrarian Reform, and all private mines and companies were taken over by the State.
She was used by the Cubans, was betrayed by Debray.
Che Guevara invaded Bolivia, killed soldiers that were from peasant families, tortured the animals he used,I do not see the image that many have in their mind, the fail was due because they did not know Bolivia. Mr. Ulises Estrada also used Tania and betrayed her trust.
