Reviews - What do our customers think?
Lois Berkof, Systematic Theology  Mar 17, 2007
This book is truly one of the Christian classics. Berkof was a man of towering intelect and deep spiritual sensitivity. One can only profit from a serious study of this great work and contribution to Christian literature.
Classic Reformed Standard!  Mar 15, 2007
Berhof reflects the Reformed position well. I especially like his treatment on baptism. Get this one. Don't leave it out of you theology collection.
Extremely shoddy production of a jewel. Shame on the publisher  May 14, 2006
Berkhof's Systmatic is of course a classic text that is a gem. I had the old Banner Of Truth edition for years but like a dope sold it for pennies on the dollar. This edition from Eerdmans is truly abominable.

Where do I start? First off, the font size is terrible. So if you are over 58 the eye strain is quite significant. Then comes the print type. It is almost as if someone churned out copies in his garage. The printing is extremely bad. Sentences contain words that after a letter or two turn light and then dark and in a few instances downright smudgy. Was the typeset dirty? Did you run out of ink? True, this edition contains Berkhof's introductory section which is a bonus. But what good is it if the production quality is abysmal?

How unfortunate that such a magnificient work is so insulted.
Mr. Publisher, check out Shedd's Dogmatic Theology by P and R Publishers. That is how one presents a text of significance.

If you have the Banner Of Truth edition do not trade it in lest you rue the day.

5 Star Content; 2 Star Publishing  Mar 17, 2006
Berkhof was the sine qua non of Reformed systematics texts for generations of American seminary students, pastors and theologians. He will still reward a close reading and sharpen the mind. The two stars are for the publisher, NOT THE CONTENT. Shame on Eerdmans! The production of this edition is a sloppy, careless bit of work not worthy of the memory of Louis Berkhof. Seminary students and pastors should consider the Banner of Truth edition instead:
The Standard Reformed Systematic Theology Text  Aug 19, 2005
Louis Berkhof's 'Systematic Theology" has been the standard theology text for Presbyterian/Reformed thinkers since it was first published in the 50's.

In fact, I cannot think of a better Reformed Systematic Theology text than this one (other than, perhaps, Charnock's work). If you want to gain a better grasp of the overall theology of Presbyterians and reformed/Calvinistic thinkers, then this is just about the only text you need (other than maybe Calvin's Institutes).

Berkhof details the reformed view regarding the doctrines of God (His existence, knowability, relation of being/attributes, names, along with the works of God which include the teachings of reformed predestination), the doctrine of man in relation to God (original sin, anthropology of man, sin, etc.), Christology, Soteriology, Church Government, the Work of Redemption and its Applications, and much more.

This is the most detailed reformed systematic theology text of the 20th century. If you have ever wondered what the differences are between Dispensationalism and Covenant theology, then this text will provide a great review of the Covenant Theology which the reformers hold. The issues of reformed Soteriology are detailed in about 100 pages or more, and the reformed views of the means of grace as seen in the sacraments are covered in great detail as well.

Berkhof has a writing style that can sometimes be difficult to follow, but with a little effort, every chapter in this text is easily understood. As is the case with any good 'systematic' text, the information is formatted in a concise but also compact (meaning not too much in each section as to allow the reader to get lost) way that makes for easing reading and comprehension.

In my theology collections, I rank this text in the top 20 of systematic theology texts and I highly recommend this work to Seminary students and lay people alike.
