Reviews - What do our customers think?
might be good resource in studying economics  Mar 4, 2010
I did not order this book, nor did I receive it for review purposes. It came unsolicited in the mail. I assume that it was sent out free to various people, and perhaps to everyone, on Focus on the Family's mailing list. When it arrived, I decided that I ought to go ahead and read it, but I kept putting it off and putting it off, again and again, and finally had to make myself read it because the subject matter is something in which, to be honest, I am totally disinterested, although I must admit that Blue and White try to make what could be dull and dry reading a little more interesting with their humor.
While I understand that the Bible does contain general principles which should govern the financial decisions of those who wish to please the Lord, I am always leery of any book which claims, or even seems to claim, that it contains a "divine plan" of ordering one's finances so that if you just follow some "three-step Biblical program to prosperity" God will automatically make you healthy, wealthy, and wise. It is always easy to find a financial scheme that appears s to be successful and then go to the scriptures in an attempt to find justification for it. To be fair, this book does not necessarily do that. On the one hand, the authors do say, "These four financial principles are so simple that they may easily be overlooked....They were outlined thousands of years ago in the Bible." But they also admit, "...Every spending decision fits into one of these five uses, or categories. How much of your money should go into each category? We can't give you exact amounts. The Bible doesn't command us to dedicate a certain percentage to each area....You'll need to study these and then decide...what to allocate to each."
So there is room for individual application. The book doesn't come across with an "if you don't do it exactly the way we suggest, then you're sinning against the Lord's teaching" attitude. And, in fact, it does contain some very good practical advice on taking a financial physical, setting goals, spending and saving, avoiding (unnecessary) debt, and investing wisely. Notice I inserted the word "unnecessary" before debt. There are some, even in the homeschooling movement, who teach, or at least leave the impression, that to borrow money and be in debt under any circumstances is a sin. Blue and White, while wisely counseling the kind of extended personal debt so common in our materialistic society, do list as one of their "key beliefs" that "Borrowing is not a sin." Like any other work by men, there may be things which some people will not find applicable to their personal situation, so take those suggestions which do apply and ignore those which don't. A free discussion guide for this book can be downloaded from Christian Book Guides. It might serve as a good resource for a homeschool study of economics.
Surviving Financial Meltdown - Personal and Business Use  Sep 10, 2009
Perfect for : Personal Use, Possible book for study group

In a nutshell: A great tool for individuals, families and businesses to use to help assess their current financial footing, and to put things into place to help prepare for uncertain times. The authors have created four general principles to follow to ensure your future stability, and have provided a six step plan to help you get to the point that you will be financially healthy. The book includes biblical perspectives and passages, and includes workbook type pages to help you work through some sections of the book. One thing I really appreciate is that this book is very current, examples from today's headlines, and information that pertains to what we are facing NOW.

Extended Review:
Content: From the table of contents, there are 9 chapters, and then end materials. The chapters are: 1. Riding Out the Economic Storm, 2. This Economy is Unique, Just Like Every Other One Before It, 3. No Sense Being Pessimistic - It Wouldn't Work Anyway!, 4. This Isn't Going to Hurt a Bit (Step 1), 5. Aim at Nothing and You'll Hit it Every Time (Step 2), 6. I'm Stuck in a Traffic Jam on the Road To Riches (Step 3), 7. I'm Having an Out-of-Money Experience (Step 4), 8. I'm Being Eaten by the Borrow Constrictor (Step 5), 9. Honey, I've Shrunk Our Portfolio! (Step 6)

Format: Easy to read with great call-out boxes that include extra information, facts, sites to visit, etc. One that particularly popped out at me was what to do in case your bank faces failure - this information would have really helped people who recently panicked over the buy-out of Washington Mutual. There are also some workbook type sections throughout the book where you can write down information and help make decisions.

Readability: The authors have written a financial book that is easy to read and understand - no need for an encyclopedia or dictionary!

Overall: This is a great book that will help you figure out what you need to do next to become more financially and economically healthy. The Appendix contains a wonderful list of 40 Money-Saving Tips, and I love them all! They are do-able and I believe they will help you achieve your goal, and once there, will help you use your money better.
Biblical financial wisdom for those who apply it!  Aug 18, 2009
Surviving Financial Meltdown: Confident Decisions in an Uncertain World was a very informational and helpful book on biblical finances. For young and old alike, this book will be a useful tool in defining what money's true purpose is and how you'll be abundantly blessed after applying its truths. Seeking accurate and honest literature dealing with finances is a hard thing to come by these days. This book is not one of those pieces of literature. Thank you Mr. Blue for standing behind the truth and presenting your wise advice in the midst of heavy economic uncertainty.
I'm Melting, I'm Melting  Mar 22, 2009
Like the Wicked Witch of the West, there is something bad in our land that needs to be vanquished - the fear that this is the end and there is nothing we can do about turning it around. This book is a practical look at how serious our current economy is, and what each of us can do to prepare for ongoing instability in the US and Worldwide economy. This isn't the worst it's been since the Great Depression (read to see why) but even if it gets that bad, there are things you and I can do to minimize the impact on our finances. Blue and White lay it out well in this quick read.
Timely Resource  Mar 11, 2009
This easy to read book is packed with information that will help you carefully step through the current financial jungle. It sorts through the media hype and gets down to responsible, sound, basic money management principles that are tested and true for all seasons of your financial life. Money management beginners and experts will discover helpful strategies from each chapter to set the foundation for a lifetime of sound money management.
