Reviews - What do our customers think?
First time author, hits a home run with this book.  Aug 24, 2008
This is a story of the book of Esther. Velez describes in beautiful detail the transformation of Esther's simple life into the life of a Queen. In particular it describes how Esther was forced to live as part of a harem, in competition to become the next Queen. Many of us are familiar with this story in the bible, but Velez does a great job making it come alive. This story displays God's protection and faithfulness no matter where we are. It reminds us that even though we may have plans, God may have other plans beyond our wildest dreams. Velez is a first time author and I look forward to more of her books in the future.
Exciting and Quickly Paced Adventure  May 29, 2008
Wonderful and well written, Ms. Velez tackles a difficult and little described period and story in history with tact and quickly paced excitement. Queen Esther and all the myriad characters of King Xerxes court come alive. The intrigues of Xerxes court play an enormous role in becoming the provision for Esther's elevation as Queen and the politics that result in first the Jew's persecution and final redemption. All these themes are woven into a tapestry as interesting as the rugs Artystone (a minor character) makes in the great Persian capital of Susa. Generally described from a woman's viewpoint, the novel will be interesting to everyone.
Making the Ancient Story Come Alive  Apr 17, 2008
I have read the story of Esther in the Bible many times, but Rebecca Velez gives personality to each character in order to provide a viable look at life in the Jewish nation during the Persian captivity.

Step into the palace at Susa to see the good, bad, and ugly among those who hold important roles. Experience Esther's kindness in dealing with other young ladies who are vying for the position of queen. Feel her anxiety in confronting the king about the dreadful edict which allows for the Jews to be killed on a designated date. Feel tension build as the fate of Esther's people hangs in the balance.

A part of the narrative, often neglected, is the closing battle in which the Jews are allowed to defend themselves against the Persians. Velez gives a vivid picture of the battle as seen from the eyes of the characters we have come to know throughout the book.

Even if you have vague knowledge or no knowledge of the biblical story, you will find "Such a Time as This" easy to read. Avid Bible students may find the book a bit simplistic, but none the less engaging as the author makes the ancient story come alive.
Good Queen Esther  Apr 5, 2008
Rebecca Velez has deftly brought Queen Esther into our modern hearts. The author has sorted through the large cast of characters and given them flesh, bones, and personalities. Velez's research skills are evident as she enriches the beautiful story of Esther with well-placed tidbits of that lifestyle unknown to many of us in the twenty-first century. She heightens our interest by blending familiar speech patterns and occasional contemporary catch phrases into ancient Persian conversations -how very clever and conducive to reader interest. If only Esther's story had been presented this well in Sunday school, we all might have paid better attention! This is a great weekend read.
Great period detail and a great story  Mar 25, 2008
This book immediately transported me to another place and time. I had a vague idea of who Queen Esther was, but Ms. Velez's book made me realize that Esther was a real person living in a time when women did not have much, if any, say regarding the paths their lives took. Esther manages to take the life that is dealt her, and that she would not have chosen for herself, and use it for the greater good of her people, relying on her faith for courage. I found the period details fascinating, from the descriptions of Esther's jewels and garments to the political intrigue at work in King Xerxes' court. In fact, I got so engrossed in this book that I went to bed at 8 P.M. two nights in a row to escape my family and finish reading it!!! Highly recommended!
