Literature elevates the mind...good literature, that is!  Jun 26, 2007
R.V. Young is a Professor and Director of Graduate Programs in the Department of English at North Carolina State University. He wrote this primer for college students as a part of the ISI Guides to the Major Disciplines series. Young believes, and encourages the reader to consider, that literature needs to be part of the diet of every student wanting to learn and explore the meaning of life. Young's premise is that literature, approached both with caution and abandon, literally elevates the mind, and thus, the person. He proceeds to give a brief summary of various authors and books that every student should consider for their own personal library beginning (of course) with Homer and ending with T.S. Eliot. Young ends with an incredible bibliographical appendix of various authors and titles that would be a great place to begin for readers wanting to expand their horizons and read a wide variety of books.

The book encourages the reader to read more, and I can see how a person could be discouraged and overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the books listed - obviously the reader needs to be able to digest these suggestions and take small bites into the large apple of good literature.
A Carefully Written, Thoughtful Introduction  Jul 27, 2003
With this short guide, Dr. Young has written a delightful introduction to the study of literature.

Young presents a concise look at the expanse of Western literature by guiding the reader through an examination of what literature is and the elements that make it up. His goal is "to provide a brief description of the nature and purpose of literature and some sense of how it may be best approached." That is indeed what he produces in this small, satisfying volume. In his review of the foundation of our literary understanding, Young touches upon most of the major authors and principles behind Western literature.

At most universities, an English major could easily graduate without having been exposed to many of the basic works of Western literature that Young presents. Thus, the short biographies and bibliographical appendix are especially useful to the more experienced student who feels his or her background has gaps that need filling. Importantly, Young also displays a more traditional appreciation of literary criticism and in so doing he offers an alternative to the morass of postmodern theory that afflicts many campuses today.

Young's intended audience are those undergraduates interested in literature, though a guide such as this could serve as a valuable preface to any high school student. This guide will inspire those who have not read the classics to read them and those who have read the classics to revisit them.
