Item Description...
If you are a true believer, Satan hates you because you bear the image of Christ and because you were snatched from his power. You deserted Satan and he wants you back. He wants to sift you like wheat. While we should not overestimate Satan's power, to our peril we underestimate an enemy who is living, intelligent, resourceful and cunning. Every Christian is in a battle, which is fierce, spiritual and necessary. It is a battle between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ. We need to know the enemy - his personality, his strategies, his weaknesses, his defeat on Calvary and his final judgement. In a day when society has, in many ways, placed itself under Satan's rule, when Satanism is flourishing in Western nations, when certain branches of the church are preoccupied with 'deliverance ministries', while others deny the devil's existence, Dr Beeke's book is a sober, practical perspective on this vital subject. He states, 'we must know our enemy . . . we must know how to withstand him and what spiritual weapons to take up against him. We must defeat him by faith, through lives that bear fruit and spread the truth.'

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Spiritual Warfare Unveiled  May 8, 2009
I've read a lot of books on spiritual warfare including the classic Puritan works. The is the shortest yet most concise, pastoral and helpful book on the subject. Joel Beeke has managed to make a very readable, systematic yet pastoral practical treatment of this subject. It is short enough to read but packed with good solid scholarship and sound persuasive help. If life is dull -- read this book!
Satanology and The Spiritual Warfare  Nov 17, 2008
To those who for any reasons, are not into reading Puritan texts dealing with spiritual warfare that are available in abundance, there is no excuse for not reading Dr. Beeke's "Striving Against Satan." Here is a rare systematic Satanology that starts off with the accounts, characters and traits of personality of Satan in the Old and New Testament, throughout church history, present and future in the first section; and an elaborate exposition on the passage about the spiritual warfare in Ephesians 6 in the second section. While the appearances of Satan seems to be more obvious in the Old Testament; most vividly in the accounts of the Fall of man in Genesis, the fall of Lucifer in Isaiah and the trials of Job; his characteristics are revealed in greater details in the New Testament as proud, rebellious, lawless and slanderous and these being the reason he is called liar, a deceiver, a distorter and an imitator (p.25). Furthermore, it is interesting to note the manifestations of demonic possession often reported in the New Testament; some that caught my attention are superhuman strength, personality splits or insanity and bizarre behavior (p.23).

The role of Satan in church history has to do with sowing the seeds of corruption, heresy, strife, schism and persecution (p.27), which continues on to this day. In regard to his future, to the comfort of the saints, there is doubt about the certainty of two facts. First, it is the sovereignty of God over Satan; "Even the devil is God's devil" (quoting Luther, p.19). Second, it is Satan's utter defeat and destruction that the Scriptures speak about. The book of Revelation and the second chapter of Hebrew, for examples, speak of these realities; present and future, how the victory has been accomplished through the death and resurrection of Christ presently, and the second coming of Christ in the near future. Meanwhile, the battle against this most formidable foe, though defeated, is still raging. Here Dr. Beeke, setting the stage for equipping Christians for what he characterizes as the fierce, necessary and spiritual battle, puts forth the centrality and absolute necessity of the supremacy of Jesus Christ in one's life and the Word of God to win this battle, as Luther puts it, "The devil hates the Word of God more than any other thing. One little word can (or shall) fell him" (p.29). The readers would do well to take to heart the list of Satan's activities that are capable of the bruising power to the Christians (p.34-35). Just as in the physical battles, it is crucial to understand the enemy's strategy and capability, so it is in the spiritual battles as well. The exposition on Ephesians 6 includes the references from six Puritan's texts (p.65-66) covering defensive plans with "the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the helmet of salvation and the shield of faith" and the offensive plans with the sword of the Spirit. Another interesting observation here is that the defensive tools outnumber the offensive ones by a factor of five. It seems then, the majority of the spiritual warfare involves defensive battles. Martin Luther seems to agree:

"A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him."

With a pastor's heart, Dr. Beeke offers the readers an essential solid theology about Satan and the spiritual warfare, along with pastoral exhortations and warnings; one that sticks in my head says, "Failing to use faith as a shield, that is, to walk in unbelief, is sure to be dangerous, if not fatal. Unbelief dishonors us, weakens us, destroys our comfort, and prevents our usefulness. Deny your doubts; quench your questionings. Refuse to surrender to your daily lusts. Battle Satan with the shield of faith. Trust in the Lord at all times. Remember, a faith that never withstands hell's temptation will not take you to heaven's reward" (p.50).
