Item Description...
"Esther Greenwood's account of her years in the bell jar is as clear and readable as it is witty and disturbing - [this] is not a potboiler, nor a series of ungrateful caricatures; it is literature."
-The New York Times

"McDormand gives a sensitive, intimate performance. Herdry, ironic tone, covering up for an undercurrent of fear, perfectly capturesthe character of Esther."
-Billboard Magazine

The Bell Jar is a classic of American literature, with over two million copies sold in this country. This extraordinary work chronicles the crackup of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, successful -- but slowly going under, and maybe for the last time. Step by careful step, Sylvia Plath takes us with Esther through a painful month in New York as a contest-winning junior editor on a magazine, her increasingly strained relationships with her mother and the boy she dated in college, and eventually, devastatingly, into the madness itself. The reader is drawn into her breakdown with such intensity that her insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies.

Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is rare in any novel. It points to the fact that The Bell Jar is a largely autobiographical work about Plath's own summer of 1953, when she was a guest editor at Mademoiselle and went through a breakdown. It reveals so much about the sources of Sylvia Plath's own tragedy that its publication was considered a landmark in literature.

Outline Review
Plath was an excellent poet but is known to many for this largely autobiographical novel. The Bell Jar tells the story of a gifted young woman's mental breakdown beginning during a summer internship as a junior editor at a magazine in New York City in the early 1950s. The real Plath committed suicide in 1963 and left behind this scathingly sad, honest and perfectly-written book, which remains one of the best-told tales of a woman's descent into insanity.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Become a survivor  Dec 4, 2009
I don't even have cancer, and I found this book tremendously helpful.
It was the first book I read that even acknowledged an emotional component to disease, as well as recovery- not that we cause our own disease, but that our health is affected by our emotional well-being.

That means we can positively influence how we feel by how we build our lives and the choices we make. We don't have to wait around for the doctor to do something to us before we can feel better.

All by itself, the paragraph describing what a survivor personality looks like, and letting us know that you can *become* a survivor, even if it's not in your core personality, is worth the read alone. Empowering.
I've bought at least a half dozen copies since discovering this book in 1994.
Love, Medicine and Miracles brings comfort  Dec 1, 2009
When I was in cancer limbo and frightened, I would get out my Love, Medicine and Miracles old audio tapes loaned to me by a dear friend and tell my husband that I was going to bed with Bernie. I would listen to his stories and KNOW that I CAN DO THIS. And I did. I will always love and be grateful to Dr. Bernie Siegel.
Bernie Siegel's work is a joyful gift.  Jun 5, 2009
I love Dr. Siegel's materials, particularly his "real life" stories of his patients who are coping with grave challenges. He understands and promotes the power of humor and love to heal. Fantastic work.
I have given his tapes and books to friends who are struggling with serious health problems. Much better than a get well card!!

Beautiful insight into healing  May 6, 2009
Let me start by saying this is a fantastic book. For anyone who is facing cancer--your own or that of a loved one--or really any traumatic life event, this book provides some extremely valuable insight and wise words. Bernie's concept of "exceptional patients" is so deep and complex that it is ripe for further exploration and interpretation. The ideas of positive outlook and living life to its fullest reminded me of another book, The Beethoven Factor by Paul Pearsall. You cannot go wrong by reading this book. However, I took away one star because it did leave me wondering about the practical aspects of what Bernie suggests. He says much about how to find what you really want in life, to heal the suffering and resentment that led to illness, and to meditate and find energizing activities. That's all fine, but what about money? How does everyone pay for all this medical care and therapy he talks about? Not a word about the limits of insurance. And work? If you spend all day doing what you love, there will be no time to deal with what you have to do to have an income, raise a family, keep a roof over your head and your stomach fed. Honestly, how many people are really making a living doing what they love? Bernie needs to address these practical obstacles (and maybe he does in another book) because these are very real stumbling blocks to recovery.
Love, Medicine & Miracles  Apr 29, 2009

I discovered this book in my home after a long stay in the hospital where I did experience love, medicine &

miracles. I don't remember buying it , I don't remember someone giving it to me. Maybe because I was

living with a very large brain tumor !
