Overview
The empty tomb doesn't make sense without the cross, the cross doesn't make sense without the manger, and the manger doesn't make sense without the garden," says author Steven James. To understand Easter, it is necessary to experience the entire Christian story. Like people who walk in at the end of a movie and wonder what all the fuss is about, so too Christians need to know their history--from creation to the first sin, from Christ's first miracle to his death, and everything in between.

Story invites readers on a dramatic journey through the greatest story ever told. Using the power of imagery to move readers back to a place where they can encounter God, Steven James makes familiar Bible narratives come alive in provocative and poetic ways. Using thirty short, image-based chapters, Story makes the gospel real for a postmodern world and allows readers to meet Christ again or for the very first time.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Thought-provoking  Jan 13, 2007
I'm not going to say this book "changed my life." It didn't and I don't think the author, Steven James, would want me to claim it did. What it did do, though, was give me a banquet of food for thought. It caused me to re-think God's story, how things happened, how history unfolded, how the battle of the ages, the struggle for the human soul, unfurled. It helped me see Jesus as a man, like all of us, human, and yet so much more, because he was also God, our Creator, Lord, LORD, Savior. James' way with words made the book an enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to anyone tired of viewing the story of the Bible, God's story, through the same old tired lenses. Take a gander, I think you'll be challenged and provoked to do some deep thinking.

Poetic but shallow  Jan 12, 2007
This book is chock-full of what Stephen Colbert aptly terms "truthiness" - things that feel true... regardless of whether they actually are. Facts take a distant back seat in many places, the first of which is the poem opening the first chapter, where James states that God gets excited about butterflies. What on earth makes him think that? I mean, it sounds warm and fuzzy, but there's not the slightest reason to believe that we can know what God's thinking, and to just assign Him our warmest, fuzziest emotions is shallow at best.

Later, while relating the story of The Fall (Eve,the Apple, the Snake, etc.), the author discusses how the story might be myth or it might have literally happened that way... and "it doesn't matter which, it's still true" So even if an event never happened, it can still be true. Facts are really important things in shaping what we believe.. saying they're less important than what we want to be true does the reader a disservice. If he meant that "regardless of whether it happened, the story has relevance to our lives," he should have just said that.

Highly Recommended!!  Nov 17, 2006
This is the story of God and His people (re)told through narrative, poetry and scripture, all of which are intermixed perfectly, giving the reader the tools necessary to discover (or maybe rediscover) the beautiful mystery of our God.

Nearly every chapter left me in greater awe of our God. The length of the chapters, and the book itself, are perfect. It's modern and edgy in the sense that it gets back to the roots of Christianity. It's just an overall great read that also makes a great gift.

Enlightened by the Journey  Aug 8, 2006
In his charmingly artsy, poetic, story-teller style, Steven James has carefully crafted each sentence of Story with the goal of helping us live in the pages of God's Word.

Steven takes our hands and walks us through the devastating downfall of man. He waits and hurts with us during the long years of God's silence. He joyfully accompanies us to the wedding, where the mystery of God's Son begins to be revealed. Steven agonizes and cries with us at Golgotha, then rejoices with us at the future wedding at the end of our days. Steven takes us down these paths of experiencing the Story, so we may be enlightened and enriched by that journey.

This book is rich with emotions, longings, prose and truth. Oh to memorize and quote the lines of Story when the occasion begs for it.

Profoundly moving  Jun 21, 2006
I now view the Gospel completely differently. Thank you, Mr. James, for bringing life to such a complex and beautiful story. For bringing life to my life. I've begun reading this to my young teen children and it fascinates them as well. I believe that years of Sunday school lessons will take on new, personal meaning for them as a result of this book.

Everyone I know will get a copy of Story for Christmas. :)
