Item Description...
In this book, Father Dominic Grassi, an urban priest, natural storyteller, and author of the popular Bumping into God books, reflects on his vocation and recalls the reasons he became a priest. Through poignant and often humorous recollections from his thirty years in his vocation, Grassi celebrates the special moments of grace he has witnessed and the special people who have touched his life. Grassi pulls aside the veil of mystery shrouding the priesthood and breaks down barriers between priests and lay people. He shares simple stories that reveal the incredible joy, profound awe, and overwhelming peace he finds in his life as a priest. This book restores faith and trust in priests at a critical time for the Catholic Church.

Publishers Description
People often ask Dominic Grassi the question "Why are you a priest? "Even unasked, it hangs in the air throughout his busy days as a pastor of a large Chicago parish. Sometimes, he ask it of himself. The answer unfolds in the stories he tells in this book--vivid tales of the way the youngest son of a North Side Chicago grocer has been privileged to witness the workings of God's grace and love in the lives of the people he serves. In each of these tales, Fr. Grassi paints a candid portrait of the joys and difficulties of priestly life. But, as he explains, the joys always outweigh the heartache. "I am just an ordinary person who still finds incredible joy, profound awe, silencing mystery, and overwhelming peace as a priest," he writes. These too-uncommon qualities--joy, awe, mystery, and peace--are abundant in his stories. They are the convincing answers to the question "Why are you a priest?" They are the reasons why Catholics can rejoice that God still calls men like Dominic Grassi by name.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Still called by name , why I love being a priest  Aug 2, 2005
Wonderful book, written by a priest in simple easy to follow language, reflecting on his calling as a priest. It is written with candor and from the heart. It gives teriffic insight into the human side of the priesthood. A must read for Catholics to appreciate what the life of a priest is like in these times, but is a great book for anyone, even other priests! It is very thought provoking and touching!
Some(one) was missing  Nov 15, 2004
I read and enjoyed Fr. Grassi's volume. His stories of how his encounters with his parishioners supported him, and how he was able to touch them with his evident pastoral gifts, were often moving.

The longer I read, though, I thought I was missing something. While Fr. Grassi is a Catholic priest and speaks of his delight in participating the sacraments of Eucharist, baptism, marriage, there was little -- actually nothing -- which would suggest that he was more than nominally a Christian -- and I say that as a fellow Catholic.

Using this site's search-inside-the-book feature, my recollection of the books' content was confirmed. When searching for "Jesus" in the book, the response of this site's search engine is: "No reference to Jesus in this book."
lled By Name  Dec 29, 2003
What a wonderful book! In these troubled times, this is THE book to read. Fr. Grassi is an expert story-teller and shares his life's tales with such feeling. He makes me laugh, and he makes me cry. When all is said and done, he renews my faith in humankind. I look forward to many more of his stories!
Spiritually moving...truly an inspiration  Dec 8, 2003
Father Dominic whisks you into his world by sharing his personal moments with God and how God uses him even at the most unexpected times. Dominic opens his heart and soul with a breath of honesty and passion for God's calling in his life. His spiritually moving stories have a special way of evoking emotion and causing reflection into how God is calling each one of us. This book is beautifully written...Father Dominic is truly an inspiration for us all.
A Real Vocational Call  Dec 7, 2003
What we need today is a storyteller who can relate a message in a way that is personal and nonacademic. Dominic's book is individual personal stories each one chapter long. These stories present events in Dominic's life which have left him with a mark. This we can all relate to. More Dominic, please!!
