Publishers Description
Before Teddy Roosevelt earned his reputation as a strong, masculine hunter, explorer, and Rough Rider, he actually endured a sickly childhood. That's just one aspect of his life covered in this handsomely illustrated biography, which follows his transformation into a disciplined athlete and one of the world's best-known public servants and politicians. Renowned author John Garraty uses quotes from Roosevelt throughout, giving readers direct contact with the man's colorful personality. In addition, Garraty masterfully eliminates confusing details, while emphasizing the significance of Roosevelt's actions as he deals with opposing faction. He emerges as the first modern President and a great statesman.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Teddy Roosevelt: American Rough Rider  Apr 14, 2009
Teddy Roosevelt accomplished many things in the 60 years he was alive, ranging from overcoming physical weaknesses as a child to serving as our nation's twenty-sixth president. I recommend the book Teddy Roosevelt: American Rough Rider, written by John Garraty, to anyone who enjoys reading about historical people with action-packed lives. In his life, Teddy Roosevelt was a monumental figure in the political world in the early 1900s. He was born in New York City on October 27, 1858. Although frail and feeble as a child, Theodore Roosevelt grew up to become a very determined and courageous president of the United States. His accomplishments include organizing the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War, serving as our nation's 26th president for eight years, receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906, as well as exploring South America. Out of ten stars, I would probably give this book six stars because it failed to mention certain subjects in great depth. Although the book details many aspects of Theodore Roosevelt's life, it does not explain Teddy Roosevelt's Nobel Peace Prize and his work in conservation in depth. The book also doesn't mention that the Teddy Bear was named for Teddy Roosevelt. Overall, though, this book paints a vivid picture of an incredible man who helped lead America into the beginning of the 20th century. I think that the people who read this book should be age eleven or over, as it might be too advanced for anyone in lower elementary school.
