Faith and Belief in Real Life Situations.   Mar 5, 2007
In the story Staying Pure by Stephanie Perry Moore, this story talks of teenage relationships and decisions one might have to make in those relationships. The main characters in the story start out with Payton Skyy, a senior in school who is the cheerleading captain, president of the honour society, vice president of the Student Goverment Association, senior editor of our newspaper staff, and a debutante.

Dakari Graham, Payton's two-year boyfriend in the begining of the story, an honour student, and the star of thier school. In their relationship Dakari wants to have intimate relations with Payton, but because of Payton's Christian views and her belief's in them she declined to them.

She very much loved Dakari but knew that it was wrong to do so. Dakari, who wanted to have intimate relations with Payton had a one-night stand with a girl named Starr at a restaraunt, and left Payton for this girl. Payton was devistated and did many rash things to win him back even thoughit was the same reason she had retaliated, and even thent her efforts were meaningless.

It took her a long time to ease the pain of what Dakari had done to her and leave her. She stopped eating she was depressed, the usual thing that happens when a girl gets her heart broken. Then after she got passed it a little, she had even more problems with her friends, 1 had cheated on her and the other was tested positive for pregnancy, she helps them through this.

She then starts to get to know another boy of her acquiantance, Tad Taylor and they spend some time together. I think that Tad is a perfect match for Payton and a very good influence on her as well. This book helps young christian woman and men get a good godly view on things.

I think this book could have given a bit of a better ending but it was still a very good book to read. Also i would like to recommend this book for mature audiences only and at the very least 16+ if anything.
a Must READ  Jan 31, 2007
My daughter and a group of young high school girls read the book. The discussion was eye opening. I am proud to see so many young ladies with values that align with the book. It definately sparked conversation and I hope to introduce more young ladies to it early so that they have something to think about. It is all about choices.
A great book to end the year!!!  Dec 24, 2006
This book was full of drama! drama! drama! everywhere! Staying Pure opened up with a big bang! We were glued to the pages until the end of the book! This was a really good book for teens. It covered a lot of issues we teens go through but it sometimes was a little overwhelming. All of the main characters either had a drinking problem, had caught an STD, had a scare with teen pregnancy, pressures of having sex, stalking, dealing with stepparents, friends squabbling, etc.

The main character, Payton Skky was a goodie-girl in a good sense. Her parents were wealthy--her father was the owner of an automobile dealership. Payton had a good relationship with God and she made sure that she wouldn't do anything to cause God to become angry or upset with her for breaking any Christian rules. She had a hard time in trying to stay a pure virgin because her boyfriend, the fine football star, Dakari, had put some pressure on her to have sex with him. She loved her boyfriend but wasn't going to let him coax her into having sex.

Lynzi, Payton's best friend, is dating this boy named Bam who is best friends with Dakari. Lynzi ends up missing her period. She goes to the doctor to have a pregnancy test and everyone is on pins and needles hoping that she isn't pregnant, especially with it being so close to the debutante ball.

This girl named Starr is the beautiful new teen on the block at the high school and she has her eyes set on Dakari. Since Payton won't have sex with Dakari, he dates Starr, who is already sexually active, and Starr ends up having sex with Dakari. Payton is jealous and Starr always throws Dakari up in her face. Dakari really don't want Starr as a girlfriend. He wants Payton back but Payton ends up meeting this cute guy named Tad who is also a football hero at his high school. Tad is a very religious guy and he has vowed not to have sex until he gets married. At first Payton didn't like him, but she realized that they had more in common than she had with Dakari. Payton still wanted to be friends with Dakari because she still had feelings for him.

Dakari ended up taking Starr to the Deb ball and Tad took Payton. Payton's parents liked Tad and they really liked Dakari too. At the Deb ball, a whole lot of drama takes off (you'll have to read this part for yourself). Then something happens to Dakari and he confides in Payton because she is the only person he could trust. He wanted Payton back so badly but it was too late because Payton had already fallen in love with Tad.

This book was really, really good. It was a little long and even though Payton talked a lot about her relationship with God, it was not preachy. We agreed with her take on the Halloween holiday that it was evil. But her church found a way to celebrate it and turn it into a Hallelujah holiday. Instead of wearing ghoulish costumes, everyone dressed as a character in the Bible. We thought that was pretty cool and so did our parents.

The premise of the story is that teens are going to be faced with all sorts of issues like teen pregnancy and alcoholism, but it is important to "stay pure."

We recommend this book to ALL teens because it was good and filled with a lot of drama that we go through as teens in school. The only thing we didn't like was sometimes the way the teens talked. We don't say "ya." It was a lot of that in the book but the book was still good.

5 Snaps!!!!!
An enjoyable novel that tackles serious issues  Mar 16, 2006
Payton Skky seems to have it all --- she's a straight-A student at Lucy Laney High School, captain of the cheerleading squad, and to top it all off, she's dating Dakari Graham, the most sought-after boy in school. However, as STAYING PURE, the first installment in the Payton Skky series by Stephanie Perry Moore, opens, she finds herself confronted with a serious problem. Dakari wants to move their relationship to the next level, though Payton is conflicted. Having been raised in a Christian home, she had always vowed to save sex for marriage. When she resolutely tells Dakari "no," he goes off to get what he wants with another girl, leaving Payton devastated.

As she reels over the loss of her boyfriend, often wishing she had just given in, Payton goes through a process of self-discovery and religious re-awakening. Her best friends --- Rain, Lynzi and Dymond --- are always there to stand up for her and often teach her firsthand the heavy price of pre-marital sex. Payton eventually forms a strong relationship with Tad Taylor, Dakari's devoutly religious football rival. The relationship is centered not on physical attributes but on God, giving Payton a whole new series of complicated questions to ask.

I found STAYING PURE to be highly readable, despite a few flaws. The characters can be annoying at times. Payton is all too quick to point out her popularity, her good looks and her family's wealth. Other characters, such as Tad, seem slightly over the top. Although Moore is trying to present her readers with the model for a godly boy, he tends to come off as being contrived and often errs a bit too much on the "preachy" side. (As romantic as a Valentine's Day spent reading the Bible can be, I think most young girls will not consider him to be as perfect as Moore intends.) Readers may also find the plot to be unbelievable at times. It seems like the book is filled with bad scenarios that always have happy, manufactured endings (most notably, a positive pregnancy test that actually turns out to be a positive ovulation test).

Despite these drawbacks, STAYING PURE is a very enjoyable novel that tackles serious issues. Skky is a generally likable protagonist who always stands her ground, despite her crazy friends and sleazy ex-boyfriend. The plot moves at a rapid pace and is always interesting. Readers will be quickly engrossed in the story and find it difficult to put down.
