Item Description...
Alain Epp Weaver offers a political theology of exile which understands diaspora and return not as irreducible opposites but as together integral dimensions of the church's witness for the shalom of the city. Through critical conversations with John Howard Yoder, Edward Said, Karl Barth, Daniel Boyarin, and the Palestinian refugee experience, the author explores how the church as a community in exile must learn to be theologically "not in charge." The church cultivates a receptiveness to the inbreaking of God's Spirit from beyond its walls. Book 3 in the Polyglossia Radical Reformation Theologies series.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
An insightful theological engagement with a complex issue  Dec 10, 2008
Alain Epp Weaver's book is a good fit for the "Polyglossia" series because it offers a theological read of 'diaspora, witness, and return' that is deeply informed by John H. Yoder's view of the radical reformation as a 'style' in which the Christian approaches all issues. Epp Weaver approaches the issues of diaspora, witness and return with a radical openness to the activity of God in ways highlighted by Yoder's work.

Of particular interest to me were Epp Weaver's warnings to North American Christians who continue to uncritically accept the language blindly accepts Zionism as the only possible read of authentic Jewish existence in the land of Israel and the Occupied Territories. Also, of great interest to me, was his discussion, in the last few chapters, of the meaning of 'return'. Epp Weaver's work opened up my imagination to the possibilities for future justice and reconciliation that continue to spring up in that conflicted region of the world.

I recommend this book to anyone who's interested in a careful read of the situation in Israel-Palestine, possibilities for justice and reconciliation, and also a very keen theological read of all of these issues.
