Reviews - What do our customers think?
nice romance with good Christian values  Mar 26, 2010
This is the first book in a series about Bonneterre, LA. The book centers around wedding planner Anne Hawthorne. She is 35 and single, but praying for a husband of her own. When George Laurence enters her life, she thinks God may have introduced her to the One. George is a 41-year-old personal assistant to a star. He's been asked to keep his employers identity a secret while his wedding is planned to keep the reporters at bay. Meeting Anne has him feeling even more guilty about his deception of who the groom really is.

This is a nice little romance. Quite a bit of it is predictable, but I believe it is meant to be so. The middle dragged just a bit with a lot of back and forth--trust, don't trust, forgive, don't forgive. Anne is a little bit too emotional and her growth didn't really happen until the very end of the book. George didn't really have any growth--it would have been nice to see a little more depth in his character.

The message of this book focuses on forgiveness and God's plan for each of us. Anne needs to forgive not only current grievances, but those from her past before she can move on with her life. Both Anne and George are searching out God's plan in their lives and hoping it includes each other. I appreciated the simple way it was handled. Lots of prayer is included as well as time with God.

Overall, it was a nice, sweet romance. I liked it well enough to be looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Menu for Romance.
A Fun Romantic Story  Jan 30, 2010
This book was wonderful light-hearted fun. The main character, Anne Hawthorne, is a wedding planner who meets a perspective client, George Laurence, and instantly feels like maybe her single days are over and God has answered her prayers. Even though Anne is attracted to George, she maintains a professional distance because she's been led to believe George is the soon-to-be-married groom. As their mutual attraction grows, George struggles to find a way to tell Anne what his real roll is in the wedding that Anne is planning. Getting to the truth and watching the budding relationship between Anne and George was touching and pure enjoyment.
Sweet, Yet Unique  Dec 23, 2009
I finally got around to reading this, having read Menu for Romance first.
I have to say, I enjoyed Menu for Romance more, maybe because I'm just not a "plot person." However, I'm giving it five stars because I loved Anne's character. Unlike most CBA heroines, she wasn't always like "Oh my gosh the clock is ticking I HAVE to find a husband!" Instead, she viewed romance as just another thing to cross off her list--of course it was important, but no more important than any other task she had to do. The first seen where she calmly accepts being stood up by a blind date was so funny--and empowering.
And George was cute. Of course, as other reviewers have said, I loved how they fell for each other's personalities, rather than their looks--but in a realistic way. Dacus creates two practical, workaholic characters, and instead of having them turn into wishy-washy romantics the first time they look into one another's eyes, she shows them growing and changing. They also take things slow--not becoming engaged two minutes after they declare their love for each other.
This contemporary is fun, like chick lit, and has themes of honor and patience, like historicals do. I wish her other book would come out!
I Will Definitely Be Reading More by Kaye Dacus!  Nov 28, 2009
Romance stories are not typically my cup of tea. When I first started reading fiction a lot, they were, but I no longer go out of my way any more to read a romance. Well.....I'm glad I decided to make an exception for Stand-in Groom! This is a romance done right!

Anne's career choice alone really makes this book stand out. I had a brief desire at one point in my life to be a wedding planner, but now that I actually know what's involved, plus reading how Anne practically runs herself ragged day after day.....let's just say that I'll leave that job to the professionals. I loved how she really cared for each one of the brides that she worked with, so much so that she would drop everything at a moment's notice to help one of them through a crisis.

And then, there's George.... My, my, my! He set my heart to flutterin' from the moment he first met Anne. Initially, his part in the story was a little confusing, especially trying to distinguish between the role he was trying to play and the person he really was, but things quickly became easy to follow. Oh, and did I mention that he's British? And such a perfect gentleman? Wow!

Parts of the story were slightly predictable, but I was genuinely surprised a couple times along the way. I also appreciated how the romance progressed slowly throughout the book and not just in one big lump; it just made the story that much more believable.

All that's left to say is that I will definitely be reading more from Kaye Dacus! This was an impressive debut novel, and I have no doubt that the rest of this series will be just as exceptional! Bravo!
A Charming Romantic Read  Oct 24, 2009
"Stand-In Groom" by Kaye Dacus is the first novel in her series located in Bonneterre, LA. Although I've read these books out of order (I reviewed the 2nd novel in this series "Menu For Romance" earlier this year), these books can easily be read and enjoyed independently of the other novels. In fact, knowing what I know about book 2 actually made me enjoy this novel more, I think.

Anne, the wedding planner, is the focal point of this beautifully written romance. Even though I already knew the outcome of this book from reading its successor, I was gripped in the first chapter, sympathizing with Anne as she's stood up on a blind date. I was immediately drawn into the intrigue of the story by an insatiable need to know what was going to happen next. That pace was consistent throughout this wonderful novel.

A case of misleading identity is at the crux of the conflict of this book. George is pretending to be the groom of a wedding that Anne is planning. He is under contract not to disclose his true identity to anyone - including Anne (even though he is falling head over heels in love with her) - or he will be fired and deported back to England. Anne can't believe she can't get her mind off of the groom of this wedding she's planning! She can't be falling for him! How unprofessional is that?!?! Will the truth set them free to fall in love? Or will the threat of deportation keep them from building a relationship, pulling them apart for good?
