Reviews - What do our customers think?
"Extend mercy towards others...." St. Vincent de Paul  Apr 16, 2009
"Saint Vincent de Paul" is one of several books in the "Standard Bearers of the Faith: A Series of Lives of Saints for Young and Old," written by F.A. Forbes. The original publication date is 1919; the book was last reprinted in 1999.

As librarian in a small Catholic school library with an extensive, but outdated collection (for our small library of 12,000 books) from the Dewey 200 category (Religion and Mythology), I knew it was time to start updating this section. So one of the first books to be added is "Saint Vincent de Paul."

I would have begun with John Berchmans, but this site does not carry a book about that saint who died so young. He was an educator. The cathedral next door is St. John Berchmans Cathedral. However, Vincent de Paul is also important as the namesake for the society that helps the poor, a very active group in our church.

Vincent was a sheepherder until neighbors insisted that his father send him to school because of his high intelligence. Additionally, a man of education could be counted on to contribute to family finances. At great sacrifice to the family, Vincent went to school. To help pay his tuition he also tutored the children of the local nobleman. Even when Vincent went to university in Paris, he took the youths with him for their college tutoring.

By the time he was ordained a priest, Vincent was committed to his calling and believed utterly in denouncing worldly pleasures and serving the poor, the imprisoned, and the sick. As a young man he and a friend were captured by pirates and sold into slavery in North Africa. Later he escaped and returned to France. This experience influenced his work with the imprisoned. He was totally appalled at the subhuman circumstances he found for prisoners and worked to change their conditions, even personally tending their wounds.

During the Thirty Years War when Eastern France became so impoverished and people died in the streets from disease and starvation, Vincent worked to better their conditions. His soup kitchens fed hundreds.

Vincent founded two groups that made great differences in the lives of the French in Paris and surrounding areas. One was the Society of Vincent de Paul (the Vincentians) and the Sisters of Charity. The Vincentians derived from the young priests he took on retreats to better prepare them for the priesthood and service. One of the wealthy but pious noblewomen led his Sisters of Charity, who so ably housed and fed homeless children.

Truly, Vincent de Paul was a man of God and worthy of being named a saint.

A note of interest: The Life of St. Vincent de Paul by Henry Bedford. This is the blurb from the product page:
"This scarce antiquarian book is included in our special Legacy Reprint Series. In the interest of creating a more extensive selection of rare historical book reprints, we have chosen to reproduce this title even though it may possibly have occasional imperfections such as missing and blurred pages, missing text, poor pictures, markings, dark backgrounds and other reproduction issues beyond our control. Because this work is culturally important, we have made it available as a part of our commitment to protecting, preserving and promoting the world's literature."
Great Saint Book  Jan 30, 2009
Any of these small thin books by FA Forbes are worth the buy. Make a great collection of books on Saints, easy to read, and great to re-read again and again. All of them are great especially Maria Goretti - my personal favorite story of all time.
