Item Description...
A bold look at the Amazon rain forest in poems and photographs. What makes the rain forest unique? Is it the sky? The birds? The river? If you look deep into the Amazon, you can find a caste system of ants, termites, and wasps, a caiman waiting quietly in the water, and nighttime dreams that float up to the stars. David Harrison's poems make the plants, the creatures, and the people of the Amazon come up from their roots, down from their nests, out from their huts, and into the minds of his readers.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
An Introduction for Children to the Amazon Through Poetry and Photographs.  Oct 4, 2007
I'm not an expert on 4-8 year old children because my own children are grown and don't yet have kids of their own for me to observe as I baby-sit them. However, back in the late 1960's I did have the opportunity to travel the this site River from one end to the other on three different occasions. Therefore, this review is based on whether this book reminded me of my own memories of the this site. I enjoyed Harrison's short poems and Duncan's photographs. I would have liked the pictures much better if most of them hadn't been ruined by putting the text of the poems on top of them. The poems are reproduced on pieces of white paper made to look like they were torn from a notebook and then pasted over the middle of most of the pictures. That meant the pieces of torn paper completely blocked the central subject of the photograph. The opening spread has the printing superimposed over the pictures but without blocking out the picture's suject matter. It's too bad the book's designer didn't continue with that traditional approach. The entire book would have been better. I also didn't care for the technique of reducing many of the pictures and putting a border around them so that they appeared to be Polaroid snapshots. I doubt that any 4-8 year olds have the slightest idea of what a Polaroid picture was? The poor layout is more disappointing because the poems are pretty good and convey a decent feeling for a boat trip down the world's mightiest river. The pictures appear to capture at least some of the spirit of the river as well, although the layout seemed designed to obscure those colorful photos. A different layout would have allowed this volume to tell it's story in a much more successful manner. Designing a book to look like a 4-8 year-old's scrapbook is really under-estimating the sophistication of the new generation. This amateurish looking layout really gets in the way of the book's over-all message. The poems themselves and the photos aren't bad and definitely worth reading and viewing.
