Body and Soul  Jan 9, 2007
The Roman Catholic catechism long ago proclaimed that "man is a creature, composed of body and soul, made in the image and likeness of God.' However one interprets the assertion about the Divine, the first is indisputable. After Descartes (1596-1650) the Western world moved steadily to demarcate the two. Freud brought them back together, unexpectedly; he did not accept the reality of a soul,a spiritual dimension to human life. Since Freud psychological positions have broadened well beyond his biological theory. The same psychological processes undergird every domain of mental life. To paraphrase Jung, where does the Self end and God begin? Who knows? But the psychic road for believer and non-believer is the same, and all come to the proverbial fork.
Delightful and vital for men of any age, it ust be read and re-read!  Nov 3, 2006
Soul and Self is one of those small, readable books that is far more important and thought provoking than its length would suggest. Dr. Fehrenbach, a practicing psychotherapist with a lifelong interest in St. Augustine, teaches us how a man's self and soul develop and grow throughout a lifetime. "Charlie," a fictional patient who comes for therapy in the midst of a midlife crisis, is used to present the psychological dimension of healthy development, while St. Augustine serves as the primary model to describe men's spiritual development. The reader learns through their life journeys about the key milestones and the crucial psychological and spiritual choices men face. The author highlights the crucial role of "sponsors," those key figures in our lives who support and guide the self and soul, and whose gaze and voice eventually become part of our own inner workings. Dr. Ferhenbach draws from the writings of Erik Erikson, Carl Rogers, and St. Augustine. This little book will linger in one's day, as it reminds the reader of his own development and his own sponsors, and our search for a continuing relationship with God. It is filled with gentle, humorous wisdom, from early identity formation through the end of life. For example, on life in our twenties Dr. Fehrenbach writes, "The key to success in the twenties is to keep one's feet moving. The course we follow has a lot in common with an earlier period when we learned to walk. The educational paradigm is the same: trial and error. The process inevitably involves stumbling, progress is rarely linear, it takes time, and it usually makes parents and sponsors nervous if they watch." (p.65). This book would make a thought provoking book for adult discussion groups, and would be valuable to psychologists and clergy seeking to understand adult psychological and spiritual development. I recommend this book for men of any age, and those who seek to understand them, as it is helps us think about how to "plan our time and arrange each day for the good of our soul."
