"I'm Thinking About Homeschooling"
You're also probably thinking, "But can I really teach my children? Where do I start? What if I need to work outside the home? Must I have twelve children, raise goats, and bake my own bread? And what about socialization? "
I could tell you the answers to these questions, but I would rather show you. Beginning with my own, I want to introduce you to fifteen families in fifteen unique situations who have all chosen to homeschool for different reasons, using a variety of learning methods. So... let's rap lightly on the homeschool door and peek inside before we decide if we are ready to move in

Story Behind the Book
"My hope is that by the end of the book, and a stroll through the neighborhood, you will feel more confident as you identify a family situation and teaching method that resonates with your personality and philosophy of education. From there, you can simply look to the end of each chapter to find a sample schedule for the homsechool day and list of curriculum suggestions for that particular teaching method."
--Lisa

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Homeschooling for Dummies (and Veterans)  Sep 6, 2008
This book is a compilation of 15 different paradigms used by 15 different families: grandparents who homeschool, the single mom, the dad, the self-taught teenager, the RV'er family,.... Then there are those who use Sonlight, Classical Curriculum, Unit Studies, Unschooling,... I found that I had some misconceptions about a few of these, and a few were mentioned that were unknown to me.

I especially liked the chapter about homeschooling an ADHD child! I related 110% to EVERYTHING this mom had to say. This particular chapter actually reminded me to work around my son's disability, while giving him opportunities to develop strategies to use himself in the future.

As a rookie homeschooler, Lisa's book gave me some things to think about. I also highly recommend it for any veteran homeschoolers needing a change of pace. A plethora of community resource ideas and freebies are also mentioned. Best of all, you will have some GREAT answers to the ignorant questions so many non-homeschooling people ask about (socialization, real life, future college...).

So You're Thinking About Homeschooling will educate readers to the fact that the homeschooling community is as diverse as the US population itself. Anyone reading Lisa's book will laugh upon hearing people refer to the "typical" homeschooling family, because...ca, n'existe pas!

Cute, but also informative  Jul 1, 2008
I borrowed this book from the library and found it very informative on different kinds of homeschooling and different ways that "families" do it (even if they're not real families). I liked that she explained, without going into excessive detail, Charlotte Mason, eclectic homeschooling, unschooling, etc. I am happy, however, that I borrowed this book and didn't pay for it... can't see myself needing to read it more than once.

Must read if you are considering homeschooling  Feb 7, 2008
My husband wanted us to homeschool, he told me this when our first born was a baby. I was not into the idea. I read this book. It changed my mind. This book is responsible for me homschooling. Now my oldest is 6, it is our second year to homeschool. I am so thankful that we are doing it. I have read this book about 4 times. Its fun to read. And when I have friends who are considering homeschooling or curious about it being something they could do, I always lend them this book.

Before I ever read this, I had a certain idea or stereotype of what homeschoolers were and thought 'I don't fit into that description' after reading this, I saw that anyone can homeschool...people just like me are doing it! It doesn't matter if you have one child, three children or ten. This book discusses several different types of families, and their methods and reasons for homeschooling.
After reading it, there is a good chance you will be excited about homeschooling!

borrow it- not much in it worth buying  Jan 29, 2008
The "families" ("composites" she admits in the introduction) were way too fictionalized to be relatable. And the tone of each story was way too high up on the positives of home schooling while minimizing the negatives (if any- a messy house? being busy? that was about it) All these "families" were saved by homeschooling and now they love each other, are responsible, get along great, the kids love it, they're learning so much, etc. It also felt like I was reading Lisa's story over & over again because pieces of it kept getting woven into each story she created. It's worth two stars because it tells you the different styles of homeschooling. The few resources listed in the back could easily be found in other books worth owning (Top 100 Picks by Cathy Duffy- that one's great). I skimmed through this in a couple hours one night (couldn't stand the cheezy chapter openings- it's all way too contrived) & now it gets to go back to the library.

My First Book About Homeschooling.  Sep 30, 2007
I knew a woman I socialized with home-schooled her kids and I became curious. This was the first book I ever read about the subject. It is great! I covers many aspects of homeschooling. It gives you a peek inside the world of homeschooling. The appendix is most helpful with tons of listings to help you in your quest for knowledge. It is the only book I recommend to anyone curious about homeschooling.
