Reviews - What do our customers think?
A reflection of where many are today  Jun 1, 2010
I am one who would never have given this book a second look 2-3 years ago until I experienced a manipulative and abusive church environment. After struggling to adapt to the situation, I finally left this "church." This book was a timely divine appointment for me. I think the main purpose of the book is to encourage us to return to our first love, Jesus Christ. I disagree with other reviewers that state that Jacobsen is trying go mask his agenda of "getting people out of the organized church." I did not come away with that "take home" message at all and believe the author's intent was to get us to re-evaluate what we define as "church." In doing this, he succeeds. I have had many positive church experiences. Where the "organization" functions as the body of Christ should function, it can be a vehicle for healing and restoration. Unfortunately, I think this is increasingly the exception rather than the rule. As Jesus said, "the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath." As one reviewer pointed out, for people who need strong levels of accountability, the weekly "meeting" may be a necessity. The book is not fine literature and can be somewhat pedantic and repetitive, but it is food for thought for people inside an organized denominational structure and out of it. I have done an about-face in my former judgmental attitudes about people who have "left" the church. I no longer automatically label them as being rebellious, sowers of discord, selfish, etc. For more interesting insight on being a "leaver", see [...].
A Word of Caution  May 30, 2010
I wouldn't say, "don't read this book." But, if you do, read it with caution.

I've been a Christian since 1973 and in served in "full-time ministry" since 1975. Over the years, I've been hurt, betrayed, lied to and lied about. I've wanted to leave "organized church" behind, but, my understanding of the Word of God will not allow me that "luxury." There is a measure of truth in this book. Yes, some have substituted the institution called "church" for a personal relationship with the Lord. Yes, many have been offended, hurt, and disappointed by what they have experienced from church leaders and fellow believers, too. Now, it would be easy to "write off" the church and just not have to deal with the hurt. (Believe me, I've thought about it--more than once).

The problem with this book is that that it contains more than mere "words." It has been written with what appears to be unresolved anger, bitterness, and possible unforgiveness. Some readers will no doubt be affected--or infected----by this attitude (even unconsciously).

So, again, if you read it, read it with caution. You're buying more than somebody's story. Be careful that you don't buy their offenses, too.

phgirl  May 7, 2010
I had borrowed this book from a friend and read it in an afternoon. It is a "can't put it down" book. The concept that Wayne Jacobson presents really give you something to think about. I would recommend that everyone with an open mind read it, as well as his book "He Loves Me". Both are excellent reads.
This book expresses what so many feel.  Apr 14, 2010
So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore expresses what so many people I know have struggled to articulate about their feelings of "there has to be more to church than this." These are people who love Jesus and want to serve Him with their lives but who feel they are "missing the mark" with how they are expressing their relationship with Jesus in their current church. I have talked with pastors, lay leadership and even a few who have become pew sitters and they all identified with Jake's journey in the book. This book is just the beginning but it is a very helpful and solid beginning.
This might be the answer (to alot of questions)  Mar 28, 2010
Finished this in about 2 days. I can honestly say the message contained in the pages has moved me. I am more aware of God's presence in the everyday and the here and now then before having read the book. The general message of the book can be compared to a cleansing of perceptions. The story has exposed some illogical contradictions of my Roman Catholic religious foundation and given me a new perspective in which to view the world. I am using this as a stepping stone to begin the journey towards actual spiritual fulfillment. The guilt, angst, negativity, and condescending attitude of the formal church is as far away from God as A is to Z. The story explains how the business of church interferes with the connection between God and person. The unavoidable struggle for control and power along with the exclusion of different ideas, attitudes, and beliefs make the formal church a place where people dread attending instead of a place where they revel in the love of God. The story is clear, fast paced, and well written. I highly recommend!
