Great music but no soul here  Jul 7, 2006
I have seen the stage production of Smoke on the Mountain done by a professional theatre group in Crossville, Tennessee, not far from the mountains of North Carolina where this play takes place. The play and the music were so outstanding that I looked for the CD on this site, but was somewhat disappointed when I got it and listened to it. The cover says "Music from the New York hit musical," and therein lies the problem. These people just don't do justice to this great down-home southern music, even though the liner notes claim that some of the artists are indeed southerners. Their performance is just too perfunctory. There's no soul in it. I still enjoy the CD, but my recommendation is to go see the play and hear the music in a southern venue done by genuine southerners who really FEEL the music. Bottom line: You might enjoy the CD, but this New York version doesn't compare with the real thing.
Depressing music done beautifully!  Nov 13, 2005
I was unfamiliar with this show, and had an opportunity to be music director for a local production. Unfortunately, I was unable to do it...and began listening to the cd. At first, I was thrilled at the quality of the vocals (Clawson is excellent, as usual, as is everyone else on this album), at the wonderful arrangements, and at the fact that everything was in tune--quite unlike the similar songs and arrangements I grew up with in rural American churches. By the end of the cd, however, I was especially glad that I had been unable to involve myself for several months with the music. Several of the selections are truly of the depressing sort ("If you love your Mother, meet her in the skies"); I especially gagged at the song about the brothers who left home, but all were keeping a pact with their dear mother to return on a specific date, and all were going to be there except the one who was in prison, the one who had done wrong, the one who had shamed his dear mother, the one who had let everyone down, et cetera...Arrrggghh! All done in such perfect harmony, too. On the other side, I must admit that the arrangement of "Whispering Hope" is among the finest and most beautiful I have ever heard. But if you find sad rural-style religious music depressing in any way, for whatever reason, beware!
A delightful experience  Sep 20, 1999
I have seen Smoke on the Mountain on stage and find this recording to be an excellent way of reliving that experience. The characterizations are solid and true and the arrangements excellent. The quality of singing is top notch and the instrumentals quite fine. I am a teacher of drama and teach this script to my students and find this recording is a good way to help them hear and visualize the action of the play.
Good but not particularly moving rendition of great songs.  Nov 5, 1998
I assume this is the Daywind label recording of this popular musical comedy, which takes us to June, 1938, and the return of the Sanders Family Singers to gospel singing after a hiatus of five years. If so, it is NOT an original cast recording, and therein lies its problem. Several top-notch performers in the gospel music field are utilized, but there is no indication that any of them has ever performed the musical on stage. The singing and playing are professional, albeit with some curious editing and arranging, but not at all possessed of the enthusiasm that one hears onstage in a live production. The singers generally give us characterizations that are true to the script, with one exception. For some reason, this recording, following the lead of some stage productions, portrays Stanley Sanders as a hayseed who can barely sing, while his brother Burl sounds like a city slicker. Nothing in the script or the musical score suggests such a characterization. I speak with some authority here; I have seen three productions of Smoke on the Mountain and appeared as Burl Sanders in yet another. If you have seen the show and want to have a recording of most of the songs it it, this will suffice; but don't expect to enjoy these renditions as much as you enjoyed them on stage.
