Overview
Small Change: Great Impact! was written to encourage a small change in the lives of men that, with the Holy Spirit's help, will have a great impact. If we men would just make a small investment in our spiritual lives, God will give us a great dividend in return. It is not how much time we have to live; but more importantly, it's what we do during the time we live. This book is a guide to a 21-day commitment of a small group or men's boot camp designed to refresh or revive your life through accountability, dialogue, and biblical teaching. It's very difficult to get men to be transparent in the local church. Small Change: Great Impact! will help you connect vertically with God and horizontally with one another while inspiring you to live a solid Christian life that will impact your family and the community.

Lasting Life-Change  Jan 14, 2009
"Small Change: Great Impact" represents a monumental paradigm shift in serving the spiritual and emotional needs of men. For far too long, the African-American church has neglected the unique challenges, personal needs, and spiritual expression of African-American men. We have all known the problem but did not have an adequate model to address it. Workshops, conferences, keynote speakers, men's ministry, and sermon tape series only scratch the surface, never really providing the lasting change men need. Webster has created a model of discipleship that invites men to experience deep-processing of past and current issues for a life-time. Additionally, the model operates within a safe environment of male community which allows men to process issues at their own pace (in terms of the mechanics of the model, see previous reviewer). Most importantly, the model helps men distill a personal regimen of spirituality that is uniquely indicative to the male contextual experience.

How do I know this? I am a lead pastor who implemented this model in my church. Prior to the boot camp, we averaged about 7-12 men in our men's ministry meetings. During boot camp, we averaged 60+ men, daily. We did not use the entire 21 day program, but instead chose to try a test-run program of 7-days (5:00am - 6:30am, daily). I cannot put into words how the men of our church responded to this program. The model has completely transformed the culture of our church and the character of our men. Men shared issues that had not been discussed in 20+ years, which ultimately served as a catalyst of wisdom for the younger men. Countless wives have thanked me time and again for introducing the model to our church. The women of our church were so impressed with the results of boot camp that they publicly gave special plagues to all the boot camp group leaders. Currently, we run a follow-up form of the boot camp every 3rd Saturday morning at a local Denny's. We are still running between 40 - 50 men (We honestly believe we will take over Denny's by the end of the year). When men join our church, they quickly gravitate to this ministry. I always had a sense that men were hurting and needed a special place to process personal challenges, but just didn't have the model to do it. Webster has provided it and it works.

The genius of the model is the daily community. After the 3rd or 4th day, something magical happens that connects ordinary men as brothers in community. Trust levels skyrocket off the charts and the work of personal growth becomes life-altering. I highly recommend this book for men in general and any church or men's group that is seeking significant life-change.

Review of: Small Change: Great Impact & DVD by Darryl K. Webster  Dec 13, 2008
"Small Change: Great Impact, a Journey of Deliverance for Christian Men" is a practical manual for developing a Christian Men's Ministry in the support group style. It is the story of an urban pastor who was inspired to develop a ministry to men that would bring about significant holistic breakthroughs over self-destructive behaviors, the ultimate goal being to forge a bond of accountable brotherhood which can empower men to be positively proactive in building healthy relationships with God, self, family, community and church.

There are many excellent faith-based men's conferences with workshops and keynote speakers that do a good job of helping men to work through issues and make significant personal breakthroughs, but usually these experiences only break the surface of men's needs and at best expose wounds without the potential of substantial long-term healing. Men will often affirm the quality of such events but the challenge is one of insufficient quantity to create a lasting impact.

What men's conferences lack in quantity, the Webster model possesses in abundance. Over a 21 successive day timeframe Pastor Webster carried a group of about one hundred men through a developmental spiritual odyssey of self-discovery. Drawing on biblical narratives and principles relevant to men's needs, Webster's approach uses the military core values of honor, accountability, and the chain of command. Pastor Webster's tone is conversational as he walks the reader through this adventure of discovery using biblical and cultural resources to aid men in making this transformational inward/outward odyssey. The inclusion of the powerful testimonies of the men who benefitted from this process is a reminder of the potential for breakthroughs that resides in each congregational setting.

Pastor Webster has discovered what David Murrow suggests in his book "Why Men Hate Going to Church," that if effective ministry is to be accomplished with men, it will take an authentic men's culture to do it. Gradually over the years the church has experienced the feminization of its cultural ethos thus making it an environment that is difficult for men to embrace. This boot camp model is unapologetically masculine but in ways that are grounded in male spirituality.

Even though the Emmanuel Baptist men met at 5:45 AM, this timeframe is not essential to the success of the model. As long as the environment is reflective and conducive for uninterrupted engagement, similar outcomes can be experienced. It is important though as with any support group type model to have a strong referral system for those who may need professional Christian counseling as a corollary to the meetings.

Pastor Webster has without question created a model that can be replicated in different contexts by those wishing to use this approach. If you are looking for a dynamic new paradigm for building an authentic men's ministry, give consideration to trying "Small Change: Great Impact." This manual might very well become one of the significant models for ministry among men in a congregational context.
