Item Description...
Challenged by the other jungle animals for its seemingly lazy ways, a sloth living in a tree explains the many advantages of his slow and peaceful existence.

Publishers Description
Slowly, slowly, slowly . . . that's how the sloth lives. He hangs upside-down from the branch of a tree, night and day, in the sun and in the rain, while the other animals of the rain forest rush past him. "Why are you so slow? Why are you so quiet? Why are you so lazy?" the others ask the sloth. And, after a long, long, long time, the sloth finally tells them
Set in the lush world of the tropical rain forest, this original picture book is an exquisite showcase of Eric Carle's colorful collage art-with a meaningful message: Slow down Take time to enjoy your world.

More About Eric Carle

Eric Carle The secret of Eric Carle’s books’ appeal lies in his intuitive understanding of and respect for children, who sense in him instinctively someone who shares their most cherished thoughts and emotions.

The themes of his stories are usually drawn from his extensive knowledge and love of nature—an interest shared by most small children. Besides being beautiful and entertaining, his books always offer the child the opportunity to learn something about the world around them. It is his concern for children, for their feelings and their inquisitiveness, for their creativity and their intellectual growth that, in addition to his beautiful artwork, makes the reading of his books such a stimulating and lasting experience.

Eric Carle has received many distinguished awards and honours for his work, including, in 2003, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for his lifetime contribution to children's literature and illustration.

Carle says: “With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? There are new people, a teacher, classmates—will they be friendly?

I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown. The unknown often brings fear with it. In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun.”

Eric Carle has two grown-up children, a son and a daughter. With his wife Barbara, he divides his time between the Florida Keys and the hills of North Carolina.

Love it!  Feb 19, 2008
A fabulous story with beautiful illustrations. Eric Carle has done it again!

My 1.5-year-old adores Eric Carle books, and we checked this one out from the library. She went absolutely ape for this story. After reading it approximately 200 times, we returned the library's copy and decided to buy one for ourselves.

I appreciate the fact that he uses a list of longer and more difficult words in the sloth's speech at the end of the book. I think this is fantastic for developing little ones' vocabularies!
Our favorite Eric Carle book...  Apr 10, 2007
I'm glad we bought this book in hardcover as it has become our preschooler's FAVORITE Eric Carle book. He loves the bright illustrations and enjoys pointing out the various animals and calling them by name. This book might read slow, but it is just the thing to keep my preschooler engaged when we are winding down at the end of the day. This book is definitely a hit in our house.
A Beautiful book and a Keeper  Feb 17, 2007
The sloth does everything slowly slowly slowly. All the rain forest animals question why he is the way he is. Jaguar accuses him of being lazy. The sloth stands up for himself, accepting himself with all his slothful charactistics but denying laziness. A very good story about self-acceptance and understanding of differences.

The illustrations depict the animals of the rain forest in bold brilliant colors. Each animal is indentified at the end of the book. The text is large and clear.

An introduction by Jane Goodall provides information about sloths.

This book succeeds as a total package.
Wonderful book for young and old  Dec 23, 2004
This is one of my favorite books to read to my daughter at night, and it is one of her faves as well. The art and prose are beautiful, and whether or not the child understands all of the words is beside the point. It is great for getting the little one to slow down her engine and appreciate those who may not move at the same speed. Drawing on the biblical standpoint of sloth as one of the deadly sins, the other creatures ridicule the sloth for being so lazy. Here Carle gets us to appreciate the great virtue of being, well, "slothful." In this fast-moving and chaotic world (which greatly affects our kids whether we care to admit it or not)the sloth can teach us a lot through his contemplative and deliberate philosophy of life. I strongly recommend this book.
Maybe more appreciated by adults than by children  Oct 17, 2004
The book is absolutly beautiful! However, it leaves some kids lost towards the end with long sentences and a few tricky words that they don't understand (such as "lackadaisical").

I gave it as a gift to an adult friend who is a fan of Carle's work.

The bulk of the story shares the easy, accesible writing style we have come to expect of Carle, but the end will leave little ones clueless.
