Reviews - What do our customers think?
Sobering but necessary  May 28, 2009
Originally titled 'The Plague of Plagues-A treatise on Sin'.The later unabridged Banner of Truth edition was titled 'The Sinfulness of Sin'.
In a day in which moral relativism and pragmatism abound;the Puritans were uncompromising in their teaching on sin. What sin is,how God views it and the consequences of sin both in this life and in the age to come.
We should not and cannot do evil that good may come. "To think that we can benefit the work of God by some act of sin on our part is to make God dependent on the behaviour of the devil." Any such pragmatic thinking is clearly exposed for the evil that it is.
There is a freshness in stating the truth in a slightly different way.Sin has often been defined as 'Any lack of conformity to God's moral law' or 'sin is a transgression of the law of God' etc.In the preface the root of what sin is ,is put like this "that attitude of not wanting to do what God says"(which is exactly what the essence of sin is),desiring my will above or instead of wanting to do God's will.
We live in a time where sin and lawlessness abound. There needs to be much more preaching and teaching on sin and its consequences. There is relatively little preaching and teaching on hell.Even the comments(in this book)on some aspects of hell would help to fill some of that void(if this book received a wider audience). The ungodly use the word hell to speak of intolerable misery,Hell never ends(there is misery ,sorrow and crying without relief). There is nothing else in hell but great torment(from Satan, one's own conscience and from God's wrath).
A potential drawback with any abridgement is that the abridger may lose the meaning intended by the origonal author. An example of this can be found on p.76"Although His nature is love, such is the evil of sin that it has caused hatred in God Himself."The sense that one gets from this statement is that God hating sin(and therefore hating the sinner)is a bad thing.I think Biblically speaking(hatred of evil, therefore hatred of those who continue in evil doing is part of God's holy and righteous nature.I don't think the original(the unabridged)gives that perspective at all. Here is the quote on that paragraph from the unabridged work'The Sinfulness of Sin'p.189" as a certain scholar expresses it,this is the highest that can be spoken of the venom of sin, that in a sense ,and to speak after the manner of men,it has put hatred into God Himself;it has made the Lord hate and destroy His own workmanship.God is love, and judgement is His strange work;yet sin makes Him out of love with men and in love with their destruction at last.Though He does not delight in the death of a sinner who repents, yet He does in the death of one who is impenitient." Part of the reason that the abridger lost the sense that Mr.Venning intended might be because he tried to be to brief.
Grace Publications has done a monumental service for the Church of Christ with their abridged works(there are 22 thus far,'Sin Is Serious' is the last one that has been attempted).Even though there may be a rare departure from the authors original sense, the substance of their works have been retained and has made these spirtual gems more accessible to many in this generation.
