Item Description...
Simply Bonaventure may very well become the standard English introduction to his thought... Joseph P. Chinnici, O.F.M., Franciscan School of Theology, Berkeley, California

Publishers Description
Simply Bonaventure may very well become the standard English introduction to Bonaventures thought for college and graduate school teachers and students. Joseph P. Chinnici, OFM Professor of Church History Franciscan School of Theology Graduate Theological Union Berkeley, California. Simply Bonaventure provides an introduction to the life, thought and writings of the medieval Franciscan, Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. The majority of the work is devoted to Bonaventures theology, which is summarized according to his own metaphysical scheme of origin (God), purpose (creation), and destiny (goal of creation). His trinitarian, Christocentric theology is highly relevant to a global world and to the postmodern Christian experience. Sr. Delios work is the first to provide a comprehensive view of Bonaventures theology, together with an introduction to his life and writings, and to place his theology in dialogue with contemporary human experience. With this book Ilia Delio has provided a long needed introduction to Bonaventures thought. But she has done more than merely open the door to Bonaventures world. Because of the depth of her own mature scholarly and spiritual insight, her book can enrich not only beginners but seasoned Bonaventure scholars as well. Ewert Cousins Editor and Translator of the Bonaventure volume in The Classics of Western Spirituality Ilia Delio's work combines the adroit use of primary sources, the best of critical commentaries on Bonaventure's thought, and contemporary questions to take the reader on an exciting journey into the heart of one of the medieval period's most dynamic Franciscan thinkers. Joseph P. Chinnici, O.F.M. This fine book is deeply rooted in the very best scholarship yet presented in a gentle spirit and un-intimidating style. Those who study it carefully will gain not only a renewed appreciation of a truly great theologian and saint, but also an admiration for the loving way in which Delio has treated his spiritual vision. I strongly recommend this work to anyone interested in the very best spiritual writing. John F. Haught Professor of Theology Georgetown University

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A good and simple introduction   Oct 7, 2007
I know very little about Bonaventure except what I read in this book, but I agree with the other reviewer that it's surprisingly easy to read, despite the somewhat "obscure" subject - a 13th century Fransiscan theologian. (OK, I know that Bonaventure isn't obscure to students of Church history, but to the educated public he's probably almost unknown, whereas Augustine and Thomas Aquinas are considered "common knowledge".)

I must say that I was intrigued by what I read in this small volume. Bonaventure was strongly influenced by Neo-Platonism, and there seems to be some kind of pantheistic tendency in his thought. As a Fransiscan, he naturally defended St. Francis' curious (for a Christian) identification with all of creation, from the sun and the moon to the birds, etc.

At the same time, humanity plays a very central role in the theology of Bonaventure. Humanity is at the center of creation, the human side of Christ is emphasized, etc. Sometimes, this almost sounds like Renaissance humanism... In passing, Ilia Delio also claim that Bonaventure believed in the sovereignity of the people. Can this really be true? Or were the Fransiscans simply using a terminology later used by the Renaissance humanists, but filling it with a different content?

It was also fascinating to read about Bonaventure's view of Jesus. On the one hand, it sounds like the Orthodox view: the Incarnation of the Word would have happened even if humanity had not sinned, since the point of the Incarnation is ontological. It transforms the entire world, taking it to a higher level. Bonaventure even believed that atonement for sin was the least important reason why the Son became man. On the other hand, and in opposition to Orthodoxy, there is also an emphasis on the suffering Christ on the cross, his stigmata, etc. Today, this is considered "typically Catholic".

To sum up then, I recommend this book to everyone interested in Fransiscans and Bonaventure. I suppose the next logical step is to take on Bonaventure's own writings, in the Classics of Western Spirituality volume.
"Simply Bonaventure" is simply good!!  Dec 3, 2001
Ilia Delio's book offers an incredible journey into the major themes of Saint Bonaventure's theology. Delio is able to take his often complex and mystical medieval theology and present it to the reader in a way that is not only digestible, but enjoyable.

I found that this Thirteenth century Franciscan friar has much to offer us in the dawning of the Twenty-First century. In a world that is struggling to find God, Bonaventure lays out the inter-relatedness between God, creation and humanity. And all of this inter-connectedness is good!

More importantly, Delio's book is not just for the student. I found myself being led to a prayerful reflection throughout her book. It stirs the soul to respond because what Bonaventure offers resonates deep within the reader.

This book provides a wonderful opportunity to meditate on the mystery of God's love for us as found in Christ on the cross.

If you are interested in understanding Franciscanism, this is a "must have" book.
