 | Always Makes Me Cry May 18, 2010 |
I've read a lot of Karen Kingsbury's novels over the years--pretty well reading each new book as soon as it comes out--and I love her writing. She has never failed in any novel to make me cry, at least once and usually multiple times, by the end of the story. Shades of Blue is no exception.
In addition to her typical emotionally engaging storyline, I also really appreciated this novel because it was realistic and eye-opening with regard to the emotional and psychological hardship that can potentially follow having an abortion. I also thought that Kingsbury showed very powerfully the importance of fathers in their children's lives. The main characters in this novel both go to their fathers for support and advice.
And, of course, it was a touching romance. All of Kingsbury's fans will love this novel.
(Book reviewed by my mother.) | | | | Another Powerful Novel by Karen May 18, 2010 |
| Karen Kingsbury has a wonderful way of weaving her stories in such a way that you find it hard to stop turning the pages. This book was no exception! Even for those who haven't experienced the topic of abortion that is covered in this book, we can certainly all relate to the difficult task of loving our enemy, praying for those who curse us, and forgiving those who have wronged us. That's where Luke 6 comes in. Karen did a wonderful job weaving her story around God's word, as she always does. Every time I read one of her books, not only am I entertained, I feel like my faith is strengthened as well. | | | | Very good Apr 16, 2010 |
Karen Kingsbury has touched on abortion in some of her other books, but "Shades of Blue" is completely centered around an abortion. She wisely avoids the debate about whether abortion should be legal or not. Instead, Kingsbury very effectively shows the emotional consequences of abortion...not just for the woman, but for the man, also. The portrayals of the central characters--Brad, Emma, and Laura--are very well done. The novel also features a great cast of supporting characters who are the picture of Christian compassion and grace. If only all post-abortive women had people in their lives like that. As "Shades of Blue" illustrates, only God's forgiveness can give a woman or a man true peace.
| | | | Enjoyable, thought-provoking, but a little TOO neatly resolved Apr 11, 2010 |
| I've read a fair amount a Christian novels and thought I would enjoy this one just as much. The writing style is very easy to read, and the story line included the topic of abortion in a sensitive way. However, as at least one other reviewer mentioned, I was a bit dismayed at how neatly all the issues got resolved--that's NOT real life! For anyone who has never read a "Sullivan Crisp" novel by Nancy Rue & Stephen Arterburn, try it--everything does not work out and sometimes the twists in life make us stronger AND more dependent on God for that daily strength and peace. All in all, a good read. | | | | Amazing Story! Mar 26, 2010 |
| This is a powerful story that reveals what happens after an abortion. Ms. Kingsbury definitely does not gloss over the fact that abortion is essentially murder (thank you!), thereby having a lasting effect on women (and men) who make this "choice". Brad & Emma's story was powerfully written and I especially appreciated reading about how we as Christians SHOULD respond toward others in crisis. As always, her writing ability pulled me into the story early on, making me feel like I was a third party participating in Brad & Emma's journey to forgiveness. At the conclusion of the book, Ms. Kingsbury shared some very personal information with readers that brought me as a reader even closer to her--not many authors are willing to be "real". "Shades of Blue" is a must-read--not only for those who love a good story. But for those who need to hear that there is forgiveness and redemption following an abortion, as well. For the latter group, I pray you find the healing and forgiveness that is available to you from Jesus Christ. | | | Write your own review about Shades Of Blue
